Michelle's Story
Life
I was born in South Carolina in 1966. My family left South Carolina when I was eight. From there we moved to Quincy, Florida. Then we moved to Ashland, Kentucky. We lived there until I was a freshman in high school. I attended Boyd County High School. From there we moved to Texarkana, Arkansas, where I attended Arkansas High School from the middle of my freshman year to the end of my junior year. During the summer of my senior year, we moved to Anniston, Alabama. I attended Anniston High School for one semester and then moved to Birmingham, Alabama. There I attended E. B. Erwin High School, which I graduated from in 1984. After high school, with no money or job skills, I left and joined the US Marine Corps. I know, sounds a little extreme. But it was the best thing that could have happened to me. During this time I met the man that I would call my best friend and husband, Brett. We started dating in December 1985, moved in together in March 1, 1986 and became engaged on March 3, 1986. It was the most exciting day of my life. I knew back in December that I was going to marry him. Brett and I married on October 18, 1986. We then moved (here we go again) to Dayton, Ohio. By this time, I have gotten out of the Marine Corps and had worked several jobs, again looking for the right one for me. I found my job in the form of a teller position with a savings and loan. During this time, Brett and I had our first child, a girl named Alexa. She was a premature baby, weighing only one pound when she was born. Today, she is health and happy and pursuing a career in acting. After Alexa was born, I moved my career to a commercial bank and Brett returned from a school in CT, which prepared him for his next big adventure with the Navy, Subs. During this time in 1991, I became pregnant with our second child, a son named Tyler. He was also premature, weighing in at five pounds. Today he is a handsome young man and wants to grow up to be like Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, a ro...Expand for more
ck band drummer. He is also heavy into football. After Tyler was born, we moved yet again to Chesapeake, Virginia. We have been here now since 1992, the longest time I have ever spent in one location. The kids have attended the same school system and Brett and I are approaching our 20th year together in 2006. That seems strange to say because I was 20 when we married. Yes, 2006 I will be 40. During this time in Virginia, I have pursued several different careers. I have worked for two banks, been a chef and cater, owned two businesses and was an office manager. Currently, I am working as a HR staffing coordinator for a large commercial bank. Brett has retired and is working as a medical specialist for a contracting company that instructs the military in medical readyness in the event of the use of wmds. We moved into a larger home in 2004, which required the kids to move into a different school district, but they know most of them through church and local sports and groups. We try to travel at least once a year to a new place now that the kids are older and Brett is around more. And as time moves on, I hope that we will be able to spend times like this together, either with our kids or just us. I also hope to connect with past friends that I have lost connection with. Moving most of my life, I did not have very many close friends or even knew many that I graduated with. When I went to Brett's 20th reunion a few years ago, I realized how much I truly missed not being in one place during my school career. But those few that I did get close to were some of the best friends I have ever had. One of these friends is not with us any more and I really miss her every day. Mimi Long was my anchor in the storm of my life and it is truly sad that I have not be able to share some of the most important events in my life with her. But she is with me each day in spirit and I feel her gentleness guide me. I love you, Mimi! If you know me or think you remember me... email me!
