Michelle's Story
Life
Hey everyone.....hope you are all doing great! We live in Cedar Rapids. I am married to Al Steil from Charles City, whom I met at college. We've been married 32 years, together for 34. We have 2 children: Ashleigh (29) & Blake (25). Ashleigh graduated from Grand View College in Des Moines in the spring of '08. She was very fortunate to have earned triple scholarships for academics, soccer and dance team. It was a joy to see her play collegiate soccer, run in track and perform on the dance team, but she's on to the adult life, now. She Graduated from the Cedar Rapids Police Academy Oct. 19, 2008 and is now a full-fledged officer, with over 7 yrs. on! Wow, the yrs. have flown! Blake graduated from Grand View University. He's was active in college football and was so very fortunate to receive a full tuition scholarship. What a blessing! He is a Communications Specialist for the IA State Patrol. I am still working as an Charge R.N. at Options of Linn County--a job in which I am able to work M-F, 8:30am to 2:30pm, which is wonderful. No holidays, weekends or eves. After all these years, I finally found a great nursing job. I can honestly say that I enjoy my job working with people with disabilities! My husband is still doing the police thing for the State of IA. as a Special Agent. He is working in the DCI, as a Supervisor. He will retire in less than 3 wks. I can't believe that.

School
The teacher that most inspired me was Mr. Ashby, because I loved, and still love, to sing. He helped give me confidence to be able to go on stage and perform. He let me know that I was actually talented and good at something. Mr. Buck ...Expand for more
would be another, as he encouraged my artwork, and it made me feel good about myself to know that I could draw well.
College
College days....oh, I don't even want to think about those times. They weren't fun. It was long, grueling days and nights. Never enough sleep, if any, at times. Get patient assignments at the hospital on Monday, go interview them, research every disease process and illness they had, all of thier medications and every aspect about all of these things. Write an in-depth care plan and a complete, extremely in-depth history on the patient. Write the pathophysiology sheets and all the drug cards, study them and know every aspect of them by heart, so as to be prepared for the verbal quiz from the Nursing instructor. Take care of the patients in the hospital on Tuesday and Wednesday. Read all the nursing chapters and be prepared for the tests at the end of the week. The only fun thing about those days was being with Al.
Workplace
I've always worked in nursing. I've been in many areas of nursing, including: Medical Unit, Surgical Unit, Emergency Room, Psychiatric Unit, Operating Room, Skilled Nursing Facility, Intermediate Nursing Facility, Residential Nursing Facility, Factory/Industrial Nursing and, currently, I work with people with disabilities. I was in hospital nursing for 10 years, facility care for 5 years and working with people with disabilities for 17 yrs. It's a great thing to be able to help people, whether it be to save a life, provide comfort or provide dignity while dying. No matter what the cicumstance, it's a rewarding career, but difficult--physically and emotionally. A stressful, but rewarding career.
