Michael's Story

I've seen most of the traffic here as it regards Bear Creek High School. And that's the HS reunion I'm planning on attending, so I suppose I should speak from that perspective?! Anyone who remembers me from Bear Creek High School might also recall that I kinda dropped off the face of the earth after our Junior year? I ended up moving back to Michigan in the Summer of '79, and so didnt end up graduating with my classmates at Bear Creek :( Moved back to Colorado in '82, and have been here ever since! Was married briefly beginning in 1985, and ended up having a wonderful child, my daughter. Although having had several long-term romantic relationships since then, including one for 8 years (!), I have so far not remarried. Although the search for my 'next ex-wife' continues -grin-, and although I absolutely hate 'dating', my worry these days is that I've become TOO comfortable, as a bachelor....! So, we'll see :) After moving back to CO one of my many college jobs was as a 'bouncer' ("floorwalker") at 'After the Gold Rush'. I had no idea that that place had become such a big deal until, a few days after I'd begun working there, a male customer approached me and asked how I ended up getting the job. He, apparently, had been applying for months and had heard nothing back. My response was that I had no idea, I had merely applied because I could go to school during the day, and work this job at night. I quickly picked up on this gentleman's 'motivation' however, as I soon began to notice an inordinate amount of attention from the female patrons there.....merely because I worked at 'After the Gold Rush'?! Quite a revelation for me, as I never really fell in with the drinking/drugs kinda crowd, and hadnt frequented many bars. It didnt really matter who you were, what you looked like, how intellectually developed you were, etc. THE sole criteria for most of these girls was that you worked.....at a particular bar! I found that hilarious, actually. And it was my introduction into being wary of women who were interested in you for other than substantive reasons. I would revisit those f...Expand for more
eelings some years later, when I became a policeman (Police Officers can even have their own 'groupies'.....they call them 'lot lizzards', and they often used to be found in back of the District 3 parking lot, for instance, after the Night Shift, at I-25 and University!). But enough 'righteous indignation' from me: I ended up, some years later, marrying a girl I met at 'After the Gold Rush'....the 3rd night I worked there ;) The rest of my life? After leaving police work some years ago (going through a divorce), I did some Executive Protection / Tactical Security work for awhile, until my then-young daughter finlly asked me not to leave anymore. And so I didnt (all of my assignments were out of town, and for 60-90 days at a time). I then went into a number of 'civilian jobs'. Got into Corporate America as a Telecom Analyst for Nextel for some years, then struck out on my own as a General Contractor. Having been a soldier as well, I most recently had decided to go help out with the security situation in Iraq. By the time I wrapped up my personal affairs however (getting life insurance in place, wrapping up the General Contracting thing, etc), I had kinda missed the boat. Of the 3 security companies I had tentatively secured positions with, none were then hiring :( So, almost by default, I now manage a team of outside sales people for a large home improvement company. But I can feel my next 'adventure' coming on.....I really can :) Personally, my daughter (yes that sweet little girl you see in the picture, getting her face painted, with her Daddy) is now in Iowa as a grad school student in the area of Industrial and Organizational Psychology. And you know what they say about people who go into 'psych', first looking to 'fix themselves'? So, yeah, I was a pretty concerned Dad. In fact, I recall the conversation when she told me she was declaring for Psych. I think my exact response was "Sweety, is there anything you want to tell Daddy?" -grin- Well, that's about a novel, right there....! But I would enjoy hearing from other people I've known, throughout the years :)
