Mike's Story
Life
Here, I'll try to keep this short...
After graduation, I went to WSU and worked at some lousy, part-time jobs. Soon, I got sucked into the Wichita aircraft worker trap which limited my college progress to just a couple of classes per semester. Eventually, I opted to finish school by leaving Boeing, and returning to full-time status at WSU (not an easy decision). Finally, I graduated from WSU in 2001 and moved to Overland Park (where the economy isn't perfect, but it's still light-years ahead of Wichita).
I still come back to Wichita about once a month to visit friends and fam, but the weekend is never long enough to do it right. I try to get to the lake whenever possible (El Dorado lake, lately), and sometimes I'll make an appearance at Jeeps motocross track, or Wichita International Dragway just for grins. Anything that goes fast still puts a grin on my face.
As for work, rent the movie "Office Space", and you'll get a pretty good idea of what I do. I write software for credit card transactions (point-of-sal...Expand for more
es devices). Yeah, adrenaline just flows thinking about it eh?
School
To avoid repetition, see "life biography".
-Graduated from WSU with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics. Pretty nerdy huh?
Workplace
I work at a fairly small company that deals with various forms of electronic commerce - mainly credit card processing. The atmosphere is suprisingly relaxed (I've been known to dye my hair blue for months at a time, and no one has ever complained). We are not required to dress up, which is good because neckties were never my thing.
I design, program, test, and maintain several different credit card programs for Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, nearly every oil company I've ever heard of, and our own "multiservice" card. Everyone always asks me if I've hacked or "fixed" any special software for myself. The answer is no (but everyone in the industry thinks/jokes about it from time to time). There are just too many different people, places, and programs involved.
