Mike's Story

Well, let's see. The nutshell biography. After high school I went to UNC in Chapel Hill. I joined a fraternity my Junior year and graduated in 1975 with a degree in Economics. I was fortunate to travel through Europe with a backpack and rail pass for two of the summers during college. I attended Duke for two years and received my Masters in Healthcare administration in 1977. Duke was not an inexpensive proposition so I applied to and was accepted to the Navy scholarship program for the Medical Service Corp administrative ranks. I had classes three days a week and full military office pay. Life was good. After graduation, I requested to be stationed in Oakland, California. I was stationed at the Naval Regional Medical Center for three years of absolute boredom. I met my first wife, a Navy nurse, while stationed in Oakland and tied the knot. I opted out of the Navy at the first opportunity and found gainful employment at National Medical Enterprises in Chico, CA. The company signed a management contract in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. I was sent over as the assistant hospital administrator initially for three months. I became the Hospital Administrator after a year and stayed for the duration of the management contract through five years. At the time, oil revenues were high. Part of the deal was three months vacation a year. I took trips to Europe, China, Japan, Thailand, Kenya and took up scuba diving. The oil revenues declined and my first born, Billy, arrived in 1988. He was born at the hospital in Saudi Arabia. Oil revenue...Expand for more
s were falling and it was time to move on. I worked as the Hospital Administrator of St. Luke Medical Center in Pasadena, CA for three years, then spent 9 years in the managed health care field as the Sr. VP of network development for Private Healthcare Systems in Irvine, CA. My second born, Jon, arrived in 1988. When my marriage ended, my ex relocated to the East Coast. I raised my older son and Jon moved with his Mom. My brother was involved in the development of a franchise company in the garage door business. The operation in Orange County, CA became available. I purchased it in 2000 and have been running it ever since. I expanded to add two additional territories and added the commercial line of business over the years. For the most part I work part time and can attest to the virtues of semi-retirement. I started and ran another company, Durafloor, for 7 years. I sold it in 2007. I am remarried. My wife Brenda works in landscape design. Jon is in college in Maryland. Billy just moved to Reno to work in the garage door business with my brother. He wants to be a doorman like his Dad and Uncle. Her daughter, Katerina, is in college at UC Davis. I recently did a home vacation exchange with a couple from Switzerland for two weeks. The house home located in the Alps was 350 years old and fully restored. It worked out famously. I ride every weekend day 35 miles or so with a local rode cycling club. I ride during the week so I can survive the weekend rides. Time to work less and play more. Life is, once again, good.
