Mike's Story
Life
I graduated from UK in 1985. While at UK, I was heavily involved in the greek system with Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the IFC. I was only in the marching band my freshman year. I was President of the UK Young Democrats, but have since recanted and am now a registered Republican in the bright red state of Kansas.
I took a job working in Bristol, TN for United Telephone, which later became Sprint, and is now EMBARQ. I have been with Sprint for over 22 years now, hard to believe. I met my wife Cindy at work, and we married in 1986. We have three kids, Matt, Luke and Sarah.
We moved to Kansas City for work in 1992. It is a great place to raise a family. The schools are fantastic, and there is a lot to do. We enjoy sporting events -- I have season tickets to the Chiefs. We also go to Royals baseball, Wizards soccer, and Kansas University football and basketball games. I'm afraid living here this long that the kids are all growing up to be Kansas fans, and I'm the only true blue fan in the family. Yes, my wife is indeed a Tennessee fan.
We also enjoy playing golf. All five of us play to different levels. Cindy plays in a ladies 9 hole league. Sarah is in 9 hole junior golf. Luke and Matt play 18 hole golf in competitive leagues. We belong to Brookridge Country Club in Overland Park. The boys also play some city courses nearby, and I get to play some nice courses on business travel.
Mike is currently the Area VP for Wholesale Sales for EMBARQ. EMBARQ is the local telephone properties that were formerly part of Sprint. It is a Fortune 300 company that started trading on the NYSE in May ...Expand for more
06 under the symbol EQ. We operate in 18 states, with the largest areas being in Las Vegas, Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. It is tough to spend so much time in Vegas and in FL, but I manage.
We attend church at Lenexa Baptist church. This is a dynamic, evangelical Baptist church. The kids are very involved in the youth programs. We have fantastic preaching and teaching. Four of us were baptized at this church.
While I don't play music anymore, my daughter Sarah is in to it. She plays piano and percussion (drums). She is in the middle school band, and takes private lessons. Fortunately the drum set is in the basement, and with the doors closed, I can't hear it very well from my bedroom.
I really enjoyed coaching youth sports when the kids were smaller. I coached basketball and soccer for over 10 years. I really enjoyed working with the kids and encouraging them to do well. So much of youth sports is about the parents wanting the kids to win, and not enough is about the kids learning and having fun.
We try to go skiing in Colorado once a year. I guess I should say that Cindy and I ski, while the kids all snowboard. There is nothing like the snow in Colorado. Snow mobiling is also a blast. It is about a ten hour drive from KC to the slopes on I70.
With my oldest boy as a junior in high school now, I can't help but think back to the many great memories of high school at Tates Creek and then college years at UK. I try not to tell the kids all the stories, but there are a few good examples of what NOT to do that as a parent you want to share the lessons learned the hard way.
