Mike's Story

I got tired of the West Texas dust storms, so now my family and I live where we face the hurricanes of the Texas gulf. I worked for Poco Taco the last two years of high school, with Der Wienersnitzel, and Shakey's Pizza work thrown in before I graduated in May of 1968. I moved to Austin where I worked for Glastron Boat Co., Kentucky Fried Chicken's owner; Ralph Moreland, at several of his resturants. After getting ten years probation for drugs, I went to hospital orderly training; nobody wanted me, so I worked in a cardboard box company where I learned to do everything from making sample boxes, making orders for a government contract, to delivering the orders with a Bobtail truck. I did this until I moved to Eastern Okla. where my Grandmother lived. I went from a fast pace town, to a small speck in the road of a township. I got real involved in the Baptist church that my Grandmother belonged. Church camp, Bible studies for youth and adults, visiting and witnessing with my pastor and brother figure, one night a week. I hunted and fished in Okla. and Ark. the three years that I lived there. I finished in the top five of my plumbing class at a vo-tech school. I met a church going girl and we married and moved to the Tulsa area. I learned how to weld, do instrumentation, and more piping type work. I have over 30 years experience in this type of construction work; with my last seven years building analyzer buildings, sample systems, and various instrumentation pretaining to analyzers. At times I call myself, "Mike Mcgiver", for some of the things I get to do. I am on my last {3rd}, marriage; and we have a four year old girl, who is good at catching fish. It just goes to show me that God has a sense of humor, to give a 55 year old man a baby girl; and God Is good! All I had in the past were boys, so this was something new for me. This little girl will lift her hands and praise Jesus, even in the grocery store. I am looking to move us to the Big Spring, or Colorado City before school starts in 20...Expand for more
08. At least I will have water to fish in by living in that area. My Mother still lives in Odessa, and she is getting up in age, so being a little closer to her and leaving the hurricanes behind, will be a real blessing. I don't feel so lucky about the hurricanes anymore. We had to run from Rita, I just don't want to have one get any closer than that. I am brave; but not stupid! I hope to see some of you when I get back to that area. It is now April of 2009; and we have been living on the North side of Lake Thomas since Aug. of 2008. We really love it out here with all of the bright stars and wildlife [animals]! This is the place where the deer and the antelope play. Oh! I don't want to forget the rattlesnakes; I killed three in the last week and ahalf. Two about 20 feet from our roadside mailbox. That makes 14 of them in our freezer; eat 'em or tan 'em, I haven't decided yet. We have joined a non-denominational church in Big Spring, where we are part of a new nursing home ministry. I may not make the kind of money that I did in the Houston area, but I don't have the traffic problems, or have to deal with "gang bangers"! That is a good trade-off; less money, more safety. The people are so friendly here also. Our favorite family thing to do when we go for a drive is: see what kind of animals that will be out roaming. It is quite different living 40 miles from the Big Spring Walmart, and the closes place to find a CVS or cheap groceries is in Snyder, Texas. It could be worse; living in Alaska, counting in days instead of miles. And, besides all that; you couldn't find me even with the help of Mapquest. I would have to be your friendly guide, in case you wanted to come visit us. We have a boathouse and a boatdock; only the nearest water is about 2 miles East of them. So that means that the lake is real low, but it makes finding the fish easier; plus the catching is steady. Here is what I have to say about it. God has brought us here for His purpose; that is my story and I am sticking to it!
