Mike's Story

Life Its been a long strange trip. I started out as an aeronautical engineer at McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis after graduating from U of I back in '86. After my wife Mary graduated from Law school in '91, we moved out to Pasadena, California in '92 so Mary could do a clerkship there. During the first couple of years, I was a house-husband, then I decided to change fields and become a biologist. I got a PhD from University of California, Berkeley in biology in 2001 and after an insane year of teaching high school at an inner city high school in Oakland, I found my dream job. I work as a systems biologist at a small biotech firm in the SF Bay area, developing mathematical models of human metabolism. I am (still) married (18 yrs), have two daughters, Meredith (13) and Abby (6). I'm a little older, a little mellower, a little slower, but basically the same warped guy I've always been. tle longer and a bit stranger, but wherever you go, there you are! Still married (34 years), relocated back to the midwest (St. Louis). I've been working as a patent agent for about 15 years now - finally found a great fit for my temperament and passions. Recently moved from a law firm to the tech transfer office of a university, which I hope to ride into the sunset. Meredith is married and has been practicing law for a few years now. Abby is finishing out her senior year of college and hopes to go to medical school. Obviously they get their ambition (and their looks) from their mother. I'm just comic relief and not-so-handy man around the house. I've been doing a lot of bicycle riding the past few years; currently it helps me to stay sane in the pandemic. Nothing too hard-core. I'm a tourist so I'll 30ish miles in a ride but it takes my half a day to get it done. So a shout-out to all my SHS and Maine North peeps - you know who you are.
