Mike's Story
Here's the brief (maybe) story of my life, for anyone who's interested.
After graduating from Classen, I spent the summer on the Juneau Icefield Research Program, between Juneau, AK, and Atlin, BC, Canada. Not sure how much I learned, but I had a great time!
From there, I went to the University of Idaho. I graduated in 1976. I joined the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity my 2nd year there.
I reported to the US Army for training at Fort Knox, KY, and learned how to be an Armor/Cavalry Officer. From there I drove to Fort Greely, Alaska (105 miles southeast of Fairbanks), assigned to the Army's Cold Regions Test Center.
While there I became an EMT and spent about 1 1/2 years on the local rescue squad. I also joined the Black Rapids Ski Patrol, located just south of Fort Greely.
After Fort Greely, I was assigned to Troop A, 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, in the 4th Infantry Division (Mech) at Fort Carson, CO. I bought a house just north of Pike's Peak in a little town called Woodland Park.
In my spare time (not much while in the Cavalry), I joined the Pike's Peak and the Broadmoor Ski Patrols. I loved Colorado Springs, but I must have been born under a wandering star, as after 4+ years at Fort Carson, I decided to get out of the Army and move back to Alaska. I drove to Atlin, BC, to spend another summer on the Juneau Icefield Research Program, en-route.
After another great summer on the glacie...Expand for more
rs, I drove on to Anchorage and went back to school. After a year I joined the Alaska Army National Guard. A few years later I became the Operations Officer in the 3rd Eskimo Scout Battalion, in Kotzebue, AK. I was in Kotzebue for 3 years, then became a Company Commander in the 1st Eskimo Scout Battalion in Nome, AK, and lived there, in Anchorage, and on the road for about 3 years, including a short tour at the Pentagon during the Gulf War.
In 1993 I took a job in San Luis Obispo, CA, working for a company that makes gas purifiers for the high tech industry.
In 2001, I became a Contracting Officer for the California Army National Guard, at Camp San Luis Obispo, specializing in construction contracts.
In Spring 2010 I was assigned as a Contracting Officer at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Shank, just south of Kabul, Afghanistan. In Aug 2010 I was transferred to Camp Dwyer, west and a bit south of Kandahar, to support the Marines there. I returned to the States in Spring 2011.
I'm back from Afghanistan. Interesting experience, but not one I'm anxious to do again soon. Job hunting now.
2020 update:
Returned to OKC in 2011 after deployment to take care of my parents. By the time I lost them I was eligible for my military retirement so stopped job hunting. Am enjoying retirement. I stay busy with amateur astronomy and competitive shooting.
