Mike's Story

Aloha Folks: Well Well, time for a story ... Once upon a time a young Mike left home at 17 and began pushing a broom to survive (most kids don't do that these days) but stoically he graduated high school with a great group of individuals and marched on to higher education. 3 party hearty years at El Camino (Mike Harrold and Mark Anderson - each class of 66 were great friends). Then 2 semesters at Long Beach state (Bob Weeks was a great friend waking me up in the CSULB parking lot in my old 57 chevy panel truck) preceeded Mike being drafted into the army. Then followed good byes, tears, boot camp, advanced infantry training and finally one year of rotary wing flight school ... lots of thrills, pain and drinking combined with large drill sargents and tough tac officers. One year, Four months and 19 days of training later a somber Mike was given a hardship discharge to help with his family after his Dad, a 2 war veteran was given a terminal cancer diagnosis - rest in peace Major Bill - love you sir. Flashing forward ...after helping resolve his family difficulties, Mike re-enrolled at CSULB while working as a draftsman at Douglas Aircraft. With GI bill help and now swinging a hammer a somewhat more mature Mike finally graduated with a B.S. 13 years after graduating dear old South High.... persistance does work sometimes :)) Then followed 1 year of teaching at Lynwood High school (Mike thought teaching would give max time for sun, surf and appreciation of the fairer sex but alas... this was the hardest job he ever did for the least amount of money) so, one year was enough. Onward to self employment with his good friend Roger Harrold (class of 60). Construction business lasted a little under 3 years lots of sweat, joy, more pain - usually hangovers at this point then marriage #1 to Diane Wold.... a whirlwind affair to say the least ... it might take a book. We were blessed with a son Jeffrey... Mike drank a bit heavy to weather spous...Expand for more
al challenges. 5 years of marriage counseling and a depressed Diane left Mike to throw in the towel. During this unhappy time, Mike worked hard as an engineer in aerospace, oil tools and finally biotechnology. Flash forward thru 5 years of work, bachlor play, booze, surfing, diving and caring for both Jeff and Diane while divorced. Mike meets Marie, they marry after 2 years (Mike is very cautious with women during this period). After a year of marriage, some sloppy drunkeness and a 502 .. Mike stops drinking at 44 years old.... a good decision for a man prone to alcohol excess and then some. Marie is Mike's friend, lover, and wife and one of the only honest real estate agents he ever met who supported Mike during the intial cold turkey phase :)) Onward to 10 years in Utah with a successful biomed startup then back to so. ca. for some real estate transactions which land Mike and Marie in Huntington Beach into retirement. Yoga, surfing, biking, boating, 2 grand daughters and music fill the days now for both Mike and Marie. Maries plays drums and Mike bass in the group "X-IT Plan" (60s and 70s rock). Mike is in 3 ukelele groups, the Leisure World orchestra (violin) and the "No Name Band" (guitar). The Boat "Bear's Lair" is a centerpiece in Mike and Marie's life ...she is a 34 foot Mainship trawler and one hell of a vessal ... Catalina has seen her anchor many times :)) Mike saw John Bebbling once at Luau Larry's in Avalon in 2008. Many South High reunions have passed but Mike still cherishes the memories of those days at South High where so many wonderful individuals came of age in a time of great social and political change..... guess in retrospect I would not have changed a thing in my life as I appreciate all that has helped me to this place in time with the memories, friends and family that I love. Cheers, Smiles and a big Mahalo Plenty for the Memories, Mike Sandidge Class of 1965 - South Torrance High School
