Mike's Story
Life
After graduating college (WMU), my first wife Beverly and I moved to Indiana where I taught high school social studies and coached the wrestling team. I wrote a book, coached the school's first state finalists and place winners, and won a teaching award or two. I then left teaching in 1983 to work in educational publishing, in which I have worked since. Publishing has taken me all over the world, from Indiana to Philadelphia to Boston to San Francisco where I now live. I've traveled a lot and seen the bigger world - London, Amsterdam, Heidelberg and Berlin -- what might have been a difficult challenge had I remained a teacher. Beverly and I split in 1992, and I took a promotion to California, where I learned to be single for the first time, and eventually met my current wife and true love, Suhl Young Chin. We travel a lot, usually adventure/outdoors travel (backpacking (Europe, Montana, the Sierra, and Hawaii so far), paddling the Grand Canyon, backpacking on Kauai, etc.). Last January we spent 2+...Expand for more
weeks traveling offbeat Thailand and the Burma border, including a bamboo raft float for two days. Summer, 2010: a friend pointed me to a 2 week contract position in a geological exploration camp in remote Nunavut Territory, Canada, north of Hudson's Bay, west of Greenland, almost to the Artic Circle - it's pretty interesting up here, "a man's world" (OK, there are 3 women in camp). Life is good. We travel and exercise and cook a lot together. In 1999, I co-founded a small higher education mathematics and statistics publishing house, Key College Publishing, as a division of a small K-12 publisher. We sold that division to a larger company in May, 2008. I landed after two years of no job and a little contracting/consulting, as VP Sales & Business Development with an exciting, small independent San Diego company, University Readers. Promoted to VP of Acquisitions & Sales in 2010. I'll remain in San Francisco, of course. If you ever come to San Francisco, we'd love to host you!
