Mike's Story

Life 25 years later..wow. Left Tigertown and played football at Youngstown State University. Met my wife, Cathy while at college. She was an All American swimmer and still is active in both coaching and teaching people to swim. We both graduated in June of 1986 and got married in June of 1988. My business career took us from Northeast Ohio to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1993 when I took a senior management postition for Bush Brothers, you know, the Baked Bean people. My claim to fame there was developing the talking dog commercial and Bush's Bold N Spicy baked bean...I wanted it to be Bold N Spicer but it wasn't meant to be. We left Knoxville in 1996 for the beautiful island of St. Simons located off the Southeastern tip of Georgia next to Sea Island and Jekyll Island. This tropical paradise had alot to offer, but I was not there much due to flying all over the United States for a company called Rich SeaPak. They specialize in breaded seafood and snacks/appetizers. I was responsible for expanding them from food service and restaurants to the grocery stores. After 2.5 years of being a road warrior my family was homesick and wanted to head back to OHIO, so we uprooted from the island and moved to Kent, Ohio. In 1998, I became the director of an outside sales & marketing consulting team that worked within the Nestle Foods headquarters in Solon, Ohio. In 2001, I broke away from the consumer packaged goods industry to start my own consulting company. Spicer N Associates is still running strong today servicing clients all over the state of Ohio, nationwide, and even globally. Our motto for business is "Solutions for Today's Workplace Realities" We assist companies in the areas of health, safety, or risk management. It has been a wonderful ride. its speed bumps though. I have three tremendously talented boys; Justin is 15 and attends Roosevelt High School where he plays football, basketball, baseball, cross country, and swims. Corey, my 10 year old, is a 4th grader and is also quite a jock. He is all me and my payback for how I was growing up. Nicholas, my 6 year old is the one to watch. With two older brothers to show him the ropes he is far beyond his years in both knowledge and talent. Mom and I are now coaches, tutors, boosters, supporters, and parents...All words that we learned about in high school but never imagined the world we would eventually become accustomed too. Cathy spends all her time at the pool coaching or transporting the boys back and forth to their swim team practices and meets. She also taxis them from one sporting venue to another during the year. I coach baseball and basketball through the Kent Park & Rec program. It used to be three teams in a season, but now that Justin is at the high school I get a break and only have two teams a season. We are just about wrapped up with basketball and getting ready for baseball, with swimming being an all year round sport. Needless to say it keeps me young and involved. The great thing about having your own company is that you can make the time for the things that are important in your life. I guess I am a teacher at heart. I have been coaching and educating businesses and kids for years. My satisfaction comes when a business or kid turns the corner as the message sinks in and to watch them flourish in the years to come. Eventually I will settle down and relax. While spending those 3 years on the island in St. Simons I realized that when the time comes, I will be able to mellow and enjoy...but for now I live for the moment.
