Mike's Story
I was a Berkeley Fireman for almost 30 years. I had a metal sculpture shop in the old "Import Outlet" store (now Ashkanaz), on San Pablo Ave. When I retired from an injury in 1999, I moved to Point Arena, Ca. The city of Berkeley paid to have me retrained in artistic blacksmithing, and bronze casting. I did a one year apprenticeship at "The Kentucky Forge Works", The Dach Ranch (a bronze casting foundry), and took some classes through the Mendocino Arts Center. One on forging tools, and another on sand casting bronze. I have a studio/shop outside of Point Arena called "The Fireman's Forge". My nick name is "Smoke...Expand for more
y", and I'm also known by the name of my blog.... which if you contact me, I'll email it to you. I also have a website that's just gotten started. My main focus towards art is to create interesting and useful pieces from scrap iron and steel.
At Berkeley high I used to sing in a folk group ( "The Derelicts"). I still play guitar and sing to his day. I've had the privilege of playing at the Arena Theater on a few occasions, and I'm currently playing in a blues band. I guess you could say I'm a Sun worshiper. A good day for me is one that's warm enough work in the garden, without having to get dressed. Is that weird?
