Mike's Story

School At Deer Park I was happiest playing one sport or another. School was fun too, because it was so easy, but I really loved that great big playground we had to play in - especially after school. Adjusting to a new language was a challenge - good thing it came in kindergarten! I had Miss Cowan to thank for that graceful transition. Her pictures of the new Queen Elizabeth was a good focal point for me to learn the language. Mrs. Adair was an excellent Gr.1 teacher - no nonsense, but fair. I went to her retirement party later when I was older. I struck gold in Gr. 2 - I got Miss Cowan again - easy on my then young eyes, and every so kind as a teacher! Juxtapose that experience with Mrs. Armstrong in Gr. 3 - a woman who lived-up to her name... using strong-arm tactics on every kid in her class and having her young chattel living in a state of fear! How bad was her reign of terror? How about giving the strap to students for sharpening their pencil without permission?!! Grades 4 and 5 were interchangeable because they were taken together - first with Miss Bernie in 4... then with Miss Taylor in 5. These 2 spinsters were tough as nails if you were bad... but if you behaved and kept your marks up... they were fair and decent. I went to ...Expand for more
their joint-retirement-party later on, when Deer Park held it. Grade 6 was with Mr. Kernaghan... someone who appeared to be a very capable teacher on the outside... but was secretly keeping a very dark and evil secreton the inside. He ended up being convicted of pedophilia and I think is still serving time in prison. Grade 7 was not as much remembered by teacher... since we had entered the new dawn of Ontario Education shaped by the Hall-Dennis Report... and we were very lucky to have Lloyd Dennis, one of its co-aurhors, as our Principal - but more by that very man himself! Mr. Dennis shaped not only the Province's educational concepts in the 60's & 70's... he used us - his students - as experimental pupils to prove his points! I loved my time as a Lloyd Dennis student and elementary school graduate so much, that I still think about those glorious days of trips to Upper Canada Village in Midland for history and flying over Toronto in a plane as a class excursion in geography, for example. He was right about how kids learn! I thrived in that kind of learning environment!!! I still remember my Gr. 8 marks! I never came close to them - or close to loving learning as much as I did in Gr's 7 & 8!!! ...to be continued for NT & Queens!
