Mike's Story
Life
While I consider myself to be a Clarksburg High School alumni, most of you know I left after my junior year and graduated from Melbourne HS in Melbourne, Fl. A short bio: In Florida I learned to surf from Jack Murf the Surf Murphy. Was invited but declined to join the Costra Nostra. Joined the Air Force as an Air Force Academy Cadet Candidate. Failed the flying physical. Stayed in 8 years. Stationed in Denver, Washington State, Madrid Spain, Kansas City, Sacramento, Vietnam and Austin Texas. Most of my time in the Air Force was spent as a journalist and public relations specialist. When I Arrived in Vietnam I was the wing historian, project CHECO officer and for about six months the protocol officer. There are many stories that I could tell. I traveled around Nam quite a bit, flying in many aircraft, but mostly in the C-7 Caribou, a great STOL aircraft, flying in and out of small bases and camps.
Because of my years in the service I was able to visit many foreign countries. While spending three years in Spain (1966-1969), I was able to visit Portugal, France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, England, Belgium and Holland. The irony here is that in 1962, in my Spanish class at Clarksburg, I asked the teacher why I needed to take Spanish since I wou...Expand for more
ld never go there. The one thing in my favor is that what I did learn was not really how the Spaniards speak, and then I learned real Spanish. Later I also visited Vietnam (12 months) the Philippines and Japan. Got to fly over Taiwan and also saw mainland China from the aircraft.
In 2003 I returned to Europe for a 30 day adventure by car including my third visit to Paris. All I can say here is that in 35 years Europe changed tremendously.
Was married in Spain in 1968 to a Chinese from the Philippines, had one son, Mark in 1969. Divorced after 17 years. Remarried on the rebound and divorced again after 5 years.
While raised Catholic, became a born again Christian in 1974. Studied part time for the ministry, including a couple of years through the Nazarene Theological Seminary. Finally being ordained in 2000.
After graduating from HS, I attended 9 colleges and universities part time and was eventually awarded a BS degree.
In 2002 I was diagnosed to be suffering from Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. I also developed complications from a knee injury suffered while playing semi-pro football for the Air Force in Europe. I was declared 70% disabled due to service related events and eligible for 100% disability through Social Security SSI.
