Mike's Story

After high school,I spent a year at MPC and working at Golden West Pancakes in Pacific Grove. I was hired by the Calif. Cons. Corps where I spent two years doing some very interesting work like fire fighting, trail building, flood control, tree planting, fence mending out in the mountainous regions throughout the state, and other conservation programs. We lived dorm style in a retirement home for veterans in Yountville, CA., and encountered ghostly apparitions several times. Sometimes scary, sometimes not, definitely weird though! I met the love of my life in the CCC and am still married to her, and our two lovely daughters are still living with us:( (Just Joking) They are 22 and 25 now. I remained in the CCC for 3 years and went from a Crew Leader to a Cook, which I thoroughly enjoyed! I still like to cook even today and try experimenting with new ideas all the time (ask me about my fusion fried rice). I longed for the outdoors and got a job working for a tiny town called Azusa in southern Ca. after the 3 yrs in the CCC, and was taught the art of tree trimming. I stayed with tree trimming and moved to a larger city where my pay and opportunities increased. Through the misappropriations of the state of ...Expand for more
Ca, the city downsized and 75% of the workforce was let go. I got to stay and got promoted because I had continued taking classes throughout my career. I have an MBA and am looking for the opportunity to move on or up. I am still an active ecologist as I have logged 10,000 tree plantings in my lifetime. I continue in my conservation and wildlife protection efforts. My house resembles a small zoo as my wife rehabs broken and displaced wild and domestic animals. We have in our collection; opossums,skunks(17!) squirrels, tortoises, crows, hawks, pigeons, and several dogs. We have had raccoons, but try not to as they can become very mean and aggressive without any hesitation or provocation. We also have taken in the stray young adult as we have a small backhouse. This cannot be applied to our wildlife conservation efforts though! Some have stayed as little as a few months while some have stayed as long as a year or more. My hair has just started getting a few grays (ohno!) and the years of tree trimming have caused me to have several operations to repair broken down body parts. Thank God for modern medicine and good drugs! All in all, I logged on to see who is still alive and out there hope to hear from some!
