I thought I'd post a few notes for those who may wonder what happened to me after I left Springfield High in Nov. of 1970? My family moved to Portland after that and I'm still in the Portland area (Gresham) after all these years. I no longer run, I did until about 1980 but the rigors of life and the pounding on my knees and ankles forced me to do something less vigorous. My fondest Springfield memories are from Track and Cross Country with Coach Deborde. I still sometimes wonder if the Cross Country "Most Outstanding Athlete" Trophy I won in '69 & '70 is still displayed in the trophy case after all these years? Are the photos of every graduating class still displayed in the halls also? Springfield had few famous people like Ken Kesey displayed on those walls. I was lucky to run in the days of Steve Prefontaine and in some Track & Cross Country meets against him my Sophomore year. I was a good runner but Prefontaine was a fantastic runner! Now I just ride my 10-speed or mountain bike for exercise, not fast anymore, but sometimes over 15 mile stretches, it's easier on the joints...Expand for more
