Mike's Story
I emigrated from the US to South Africa back in 1981 with my young son and first wife to do missionary work for the Baha'i Faith and to take up a job teaching horticulture at a so-called Black University. I witnessed the dying years of apartheid and the advent of democracy in 1994. This experience had a profound effect on my personal life in that I resigned from my job, divorced my wife, gave up my religion and headed south to Cape Town to try and find myself. After several failed relationships I met my current wife settled down on a wine farm where I currently have a small nursery and grow mushrooms. My reason for taking the time away from my family and spending thousands of bucks (1 SA Rand = 7 cents US) to attend a 50th High School reunion is mostly philosophical. I'll be asking my old friends and peers four questions: What has been the greatest thing that you have done in your life? What is your greatest regret? Do you think life continues after death? Will the world survive its current political and environmental crises?
But then of course I'll want to see my old surfing buddies, hike up Mission Canyon, eat Mexican food, walk down State Street, visit my sister and parents....and hold my just born grandson in my arms!
