Milo's Story
My story starts in the summer of 57 when I met a girl at the Alameda County Fair, she is a 58 Livermore High School graduate. We were married in 59, we had three children and we have four grandchildren. We lived in Livermore for thirty five years. A lot of my spare time when living in Livermore was spent helping my in-laws with their farming.
January of 58 I joined the Naval Reserves. In the reserves I had some unique experiences for a high school student.
In the summer of 58 I attended boot camp for reservists. After boot camp I was assigned to the reserve crew of a destroyer escort stationed at Treasure Island. I served one weekend a month on the ship and during the winter of 58 school break I did a two week cruise to San Diego where I attended a week of gunnery school. After completion of the school I was assigned to the general quarters station of pointer in the foreward five inch gun mount. When the gun is not radar controlled the pointer controls the verticle motion and fires the gun, I had the opportunity to fire several rounds from the gun. On our return trip to the bay area we encountered heavy seas, while on one watch at the helm I observed the foreword five inch gun mount disappear under a solid spray of water, I found out what being seriously sea sick is all about.
In 59 after graduation I served two years active duty in the navy. I served on an aircraft carrier and shore duty in San Diego. I was released from activity duty in June of 61....Expand for more
I worked a year in heavy construction on projects in New Mexico and Oregon.
In June of 62 I was hired by PG&E, I worked for PG&E for thirty five years, I worked at various East Bay headquarters with the exception of a one year assignment to the general office as an instructor at the Gas Serviceman School. I retired as the Gas and Electric Service Supervisor in Fremont.
In 81 I received a AA degree from Chabot College. I also joined the Alameda County Sheriff's Underwater Recovery Unit, I served with the unit for twenty years doing recovery work. I am a NAUI certified Gold Master diver, I have been skin and SCUBA diving since 63.
After retiring from PG&E we began construction of a home on property we own five miles north of Gualala Ca., it is on the ocean side of Hiway One. We had contractors do the foundation, framing and roofing, the rest of the home was completed with the help of family and friends. The Gualala area is a great place to live, it is a small friendly community much as Livermore was when I met my wife.
I am a member of the Gualala Lions Club, we belong to and I am a board member of the gualala Community Center and we are members of the Noyo Chapter of the Rhododendron Society of America, we have over one hundred and fifty rhodies.
Hobbies and activities include hunting, fishing, skin diving, woodworking, gardening and enjoying our stock Model A Ford. We enjoy getting away with our travel trailer and going on cruises.
