Mitchell's Story
A couple of weeks after graduating from Spencer High in June 66, I found myself--taking my first airplane and jet ride-- and landing in Los Angeles CA where I began a new life living with my real father and his family. He invited me to join him if I promised to go to college with his financial help. My mother-God bless her- said go. Had my mother said NO, my life would probably be completely different. I accepted my real father offer and completed some 10 years of college education earning the BA, MS and Ph.D degrees in Political Science, Public Administration, and Government, respectively. Of course, this extensive education changed my life. I completed my Doctorate in Government (Political Science) in 1976 with a specilaty in the area of Public Administration, I began university teaching and researching/investigating topics in the areas of health and social policy and equality, diversity demographic, multiculturalism, and cultural competency, and public administration and policy issues. My scholarly writings and publications in these areas have bestowed upon me recognition and honors from my professional peers. Today, I am still teaching and doing research at the university level at Texas A&M University. Previously, I was a Professor at Louisiana Stae University in Baton Rouge. After 45 years in higher education, I have authored/coauthored 10 scholarly books, 25 scholarly book chapters, and so...Expand for more
me 75 articles in scholarly academic and professional journals on topics of diversity, multiculturalism and cultural competency, health and social policy, and race and ethnicity in public administration, public policy, and political science. I have served as President of two academic/professional organizations, served as editor of two scholarly journals, and spearheaded 14 International Cross Cultural Research Exchange Conferences with universities in 14 international locations around the globe. I have given scholarly lectures and scholarly presentations around the world including in Ethiopia, Senegal, Ghana, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Chile, India, Spain, Greece, Morroco, Portugal, England, India, China, Jordan, Costa Rica, and several locations in the Caribbean. Because of my scholarly and professional accomplishments, I was nominated and later inducted by membership vote as a lifetime Fellow in the National Academy of Public Administration based in Washington, DC in November 1999. I must say this old southern boy coming from a very humble social background has done very well over the last several decades. I salute my mother who I stayed with in Georgia and who never saw me again after I left who said go to Los Angeles at your father's invitation AND I salute my real father who offered me an opportunity of a lifetime to go to Los Angeles and go to college!! Indeed, I have been blessed!!
