Darryl's Story

Life Lots of fun and hard work! Drove truck 3 days/week, went to school 2 days and one night weekly. Roomed with Bob "Wide Load" Collier, "Jungle" Jim Mayhew, "Super Shot" Scott Henriksen and many others remembered mostly fondly. Alice and Judy were girlfriends of the longest duration (no last names in case they may have extremely jealous husbands!) Graduated in 4.5 years, lost my deferment and got drafted, enlisted in reserve unit, then excused for medical reasons too embarassingly minor to mention (Thanks BC). Played basketball every Sunday and spent most of my money on cars, whatever was left on Alice and Judy. Got serious about work a year later and went to work for the old Carnation Company on Wilshire Blvd. where I met Chuck Berry in a crosswalk. Met Dorene a year or so later and decided to spend money on her instead of other women and have been doing that now for nearly 30 years. California was closing in so we loaded up our LUV truck with all our belongings, two tranquilized cats and 10 extra gallons of gas since we were in the middle of gas crisis #2 and drove about 1000 miles north on I5 until we used up all our spare fuel. That was roughly Portland, Oregon. Luckily, there was a good job waiting and I've been pretty well paid for doing stuff that was actually pretty fun. Hit the road pretty hard thru 45 states, 3 Canadian provinces and deep into the heart of Mexico for two employers. Followed the hogs to LA on their last ride and trucked cyanide thru National Forests I cannot name. Saw 24 hours of daylight in Fairbanks. Viewed the chains and etchings at the Marquis de Sade club in Montreal. Slept on the Queen Mary, at the Union League Club in Chicago and the Bohemian Club in San Francisco, but never in the White House. Fished the Snake and the Kalama but seldom caught anything. Worked the halls of Congress once on some transport legislation. Went behind the Green Door in New Orleans. Tried to stop and smell the roses like Bill Miller suggested. Somehow got home long enough to raise 3 wonderful kids which was a lot more work than work, but a lot of fun and (still) very rewarding. Stopped spending as much money on Dorene and spent it on Jeff, Rob and Allyson instead. Started weekend and evening career as coach of the season - baseball, basketball, soccer. So, that's it. 31 years out of college in March. Career ladder's been climbed mostly, kids are raised mostly. At a crossroad, so to speak. Need to ponder which fork to take next. Editorial note: Everything above is mostly true. Of course, it gets better with each te...Expand for more
