Monica's Story
Okay, so I did not get a job as a graphic designer. I wish I did not have to work retail, which is why I took information and library services classes at UMaine Augusta through the internet. My hope is to become employed in a library. I have been volunteering at a historical library, as well as continuing to gain library and information experience through my own genealogical research. I have visited the Archives in Boston, Massachusetts, Providence, Rhode Island and Hartford, Connecticut.
However, my current passion are beads. Several years ago I set forth a plan to open a bead store, as there was no specialty bead store close to where I lived. Now there is a specialty bead store, but it is not owned by me. I am okay with this, as I have learned that the first thing I need to do is create my own beaded jewelry (and beaded fan pulls, etc....). I have been to a few craft fairs over the past few years, but have not sold much. I have decided that I need a wider audience.
The economy is terrible right now, but I see people all the time buying "extra" goodies for themselves and others. What irks me is that what these consumers are buying is crap. Excuse me, but ...Expand for more
almost everything is "made in China". These items - that we do not NEED but which we WANT are inexpensive because these items are produced in a country where people get paid very little to make them.
Buyer beware.
Buyer be aware.
There is an "attitude" that comes with shopping. How we shop and what we spend our money on tells others a little about who we are. I, for one, prefer real flowers over the fake, artificial, plastic flowers. Most of my bead "collection" are real semi-precious stones. I do have some beads made from glass - quality varies. I also have beads made from wood - they are more difficult to find quality and uniqueness.
I find the act of creating a beaded pouch (bag) on a loom meditative. I put my personal best, although not perfect..but gaining skill, into what I bead. The other day I heard someone say this at work, "I know you can make it for less, but will you?"
The idea that something is "hand-made" is both appealing and discouraging. Why the paradox? Why are so many people willing to spend money or certain items at craft fairs, like the "made by hand" quilt or "hand-made" potholder -- or "home made" brownies, cookies or other foods?
