Monica's Story

Life My bio really hasn't changed much, but I think we've all entered the stage of life where changes don't quite come so fast and furious. It's the temporary lull before the aging storm. We don't move as often, change jobs as often, or change partners as often. We're more secure, more settled. More set in our ways, perhaps? Certainly more appreciative of the people in our lives, even those we've neglected to keep in touch with. There's something so unique about the bond of childhood friends. It's the knowing, deep down in your know-er, that no matter what, those friends could be relied on in time of need. Despite past differences, current geography, and just plain busy-ness...those shared experiences give a frame of reference that our newer friends, however true, just don't have. Our experiences are unique to us as a group. We all know what it's like to grow up in a small town, live during double-digit inflation and unemployment, watch our town and school grow like kudzu, paint our bedrooms purple with tiger-skin bedspreads, see the US Hockey team finally beat the Russians, freeze through a blizzard, pray for our President after he was shot, see our small town disappear in a suburban-sprawl free-for-all, witness through TV and newspapers American citizens taken hostage in a foreign land, see our own athletic field under the waters of hurricane Fred, and weep through the funeral of our class president. That's life...our unique, shared one. That bond is why we hold reunions every five years. It feels good to reconnect, catch up, and express gratitude for each other and our good fortune. Our reunions have always been enjoyable, and I submit that this one will be as well. But I also think that this one will be one for the ages. One full of thoughts, remembrances, laughter, and I believe, comfort. Comfort in the thought that these people already know all the stupid things I did in my youth, and they love me anyway. fort that no one thinks I'm a hick, unless they think they're one too. Comfort...that although our lives have led us into separateness, we all share one heart-searing foundation...growing up in Pickerington, Ohio. Copyright © 2007 Monica L. Evans School When I look back on school days from today's perspective, I can see a lot of things I would have done differently. In spite of my pitiful efforts at academia, I managed to assimilate massive amounts of information into my young skull-full-of-mush. I think I would have taken more advantage of everything that was offered me. As it was, I did enjoy band and choir, and particularly liked being a majorette. Scary thought: I still get outside and twirl batons every now and then. (Fortunately, no one has spotted me yet). I'm very grateful for the education I got at PHS. It's nice to be from the generation that still knows what the Electoral College is, and for whom 2 + 2 still equals 4. College Nursing school was most certainly an education! Beyond the curriculum, which I really did enjoy, I think I learned more about myself than I did about nursing. I figured out that I was pursuing a career in nursing for the wrong reasons. I didn't think that would be fair to the people who would someday be my patients. Surprisingly, I retained a pretty decent amount of information in spite of the fact I didn't pursue it any further. It's definitely come in handy in my current career as mom! Workplace Sometimes I'm really glad I don't have to go to work in the middle of the night anymore. Other times, I really miss the feeling of being involved in public safety. Although I dealt with people in crisis or at their worst, I did feel my skills made a difference in their lives in a positive way. Ok...other dispatchers who are still working will say that's crap, but I guess with time the memories get hazy and you actually begin to believe that you were a positive force. ;)
