Monica's Story

Life I've a home in Orange County, California, 3 beautiful grown daughters and one handsome grandson who is my sweet prince. Oh yes, and 3 dogs and a cat (not quite the zoo that it was a couple of years ago when we also had a snake, birds and a hamster). Other than the animals, I'm pretty much an empty nester these days and like that just fine. I love gardening, traveling, camping, hiking, kayaking, and off-road exploring in the desert. I work out fairly regularly and am in pretty good shape for my age and will be hiking Half Dome June 2008 (17 miles, 5800 ft. elevation gain--a very long day). This coming fall, I hope to do Mt. Whitney over 2-3 days, but we'll see. That might be biting off more than I can chew at this point in my life. I have to admit I'm having some trouble believing that I'm getting old and there are just some things I can't do anymore or shouldn't be doing anymore. I am active in my church in Seal Beach as well as volunteer and fundraise for two organizations in South Africa that I've become very attached to over the years and try and visit when I can, usually every other year: Lambano Sanctuary (gr...Expand for more
oup homes for orphans living with HIV/AIDS) in Johannesburg and Masibambisane Community Development Corporation (MCDC) in the town of KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga province about an hour north of Pretoria. The work here is mainly among the poor, sick and orphans (there are so many now because of HIV/AIDS) of the Ndebele people although there are refugees from other parts of Africa who are now living in the tribal homelands, many from Zimbabwe. (I am also a board member of MCDC, USA). I will be going back to South Africa and then on to Malawi this coming July 2008 and will gone about a month. My dream is to someday leave California (finally!) and "retire" with a home at the foot of the Eastern Sierras in Nevada and one on the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand. California is just too crowded and too expensive and I've wanted to leave for a long time now. I'm giving myself a goal to accomplish this in 3 1/2 more years, by my 55th birthday. Not sure if I will make it (who knows what can happen?) but I'm the type that if I don't set before myself a tough goal, I'll never get off the couch. Besides, we are never too old to dream!
