Monica's Story
I always wanted to be a teacher, psychologist or attorney when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great but lofty idea. As it turns out, they were somewhat right; I did neither of those jobs but a combination of all of them; and was very happy with my career choice.
After graduating from UCSB I had two internships: teachers assistant for 'at risk youth' in an alternative school and probation aid at a pre-release program for adult felons. These were good experiences for what was to come. A year later my career with the California Youth Authority, now California Dept. of Corrections-Division of Juvenile Justice began. selor, then a Parole Agent, a Training Officer, and then a Program Manager (Captain rank) for males and female youthful offenders.
After 28 years I retired (great benefit, we can retire at 50 y.o.) and now spend my days doing what I please-most of the time. I still have a son in high school and two older ones who work and are in and out of the house.
Life is still full, but not hectic with kids, volunteer work, and working on my writing. My favorite volunteer activities are with my church, schools, law enforcement, the museum and the American Cancer Society. I love to travel and plan to continue; I really want to go back to Venice, Paris, and London.
