Vernon's Story
I guess you can say I have had quite a life since I graduated high school and college. After college, I worked in a research lab for a year. During that time, I also played music and formed a band for the expressed purpose of recording my songs (thanks Nick!). I got offers from booking agents, but I chose the "safe" route and attended medical school. That was four years of intense study, during which time I got married and had my first child (she is now in medical school too!). After medical school was another year of doing research before starting residency - for which I moved south to NYC, That is where my son was born (although he is a die hard RED SOX fan). I was still able to play music during this time - albeit only in a jam situation. This was followed by another migration south to Washington DC, where I did a medical oncology fellowship. Upon completion, I moved further south, to Gainesville Florida where I currently reside. While here I have opened my own medical oncology practice, as well as a recording studio. I've played in several bands, and had more of my songs recorded. I also got divorced - not the best part of my life - but life goes on....
I have had the opportunity to travel to many places in the world - London. Paris, Rome, Venice, Florence, Tokyo, Manila, Sydney, the Outback,...Expand for more
the Caaibean, Alaska.... Cycled with my son in Moab, and rode mules with my son in the Grand Canyon. Competed in many marathons and triathlons - including St. Anthony's Triathlon, the half ironman in St. Croix, and inummerable sprint and olympic distance races.
For fun, I play music (piano, guitar - i haven't played the clarinet in ages) also co-own a recording studio. I compete in triathlons, except lately i have had several gout attacks. Also mountain bike - love my Gary Fisher 29er. To unwind, I like to cook.
I am happiest about my kids. My daughter is currently in medical school - wanting to be a neurosurgeon (hey I offered to let her take over my practice, but she would have nothing to do with it!) My son is on track to become an engineer. He has become my best friend.
Update: 2015 - Since I wrote this story - I've gotten married , November 28,2014, to Sonia, whom I've been with since 2004. I have a house in Winter Park< FL, although i still work up in Lake City. I am part of a practice - Cancer care of North Florida, I also work part time as an oncologist at a prison. I now have a grandson - Silas. Michael will be graduating college in a few months, and Simone is now in residency. Sadly, both my parents passed away - Mom in 2012 andDad in 2013. But the Montoya clan is as close as ever!
