John's Story

After graduating from GHS, I worked at different jobs here and there and finally I got a job at US Steel in McDonald. In 1957 I finally got laid off. Frank Morano and I started a friendship that we have to this day. In 1958 we took his sister Josephine to UCLA in Calif to see if she wanted to go to schoool there and she said "no". While we were waiting for her, Frank and I walked into the AF Recruiting Office at Hollywood and Vine and signed up for the AF. We took Josephine back to Girard and waited a couple of weeks and flew back out to Los Angeles to join the AF. We couldn't get in immediately so we had to wait 2 weeks paid for by the US Government at the Hotel Alexandria in downtown LA with meals and rooms furnished. Then on 3 Nov 1958 we signed up and left for Lackland AFB, TX., for basic training and technical school. Frank got the measles while in school so he had to step back a week and I graduated and went to Orlando AFB, Fl for 5 years. Frank graduated and went to FE Warren AFB, WY. We were never stationed together. I then had assignments to Tucson, AZ, Phillipines, Vietnam, Penn State University and finally retiring at Langley AFB, VA 1 Jan 1980. While stationed at Penn St, I married my love Bonna and we have just celebrated our 42 year together. I have 1 step son, 2 step Grand Children and 3 step Great Grand Children. Upon ...Expand for more
retiring from the AF, I worked in the Personnel Office at Thomas Nelson Community College as Assistant to the Personnel Director in Hampton VA.. Then in 1987 I got a job at the Youngstown Reserve Center in Vienna, OH. I worked civil service until retiring again 2001. My wife and I moved from Brookfield, OH., to Melbourne, Fl., where we intended to live for the rest of our lives BUT our son wanted us to move to Pinehurst NC to be closer to family. In 2008 we moved here at Pinehurst (The Capital of the Golf World) in a 55 and over community called Pinehurst Trace. It is a wonderful place to live. There is always something to do with your neighbors at the Club house each day or just enjoy the pool, library, game room, computer room, all the dining outs they have and so forth. We live on a cul de sac and the neighbors are the best. Always looking out for each other. I walk (1 mile around) the "Trace" 2 and sometimes 3 times a day and I put their newspapers next to their doors. They call me their newspaper boy. This area is so beautiful and it has at least 72 golf courses. The Pinehurst Resort has 8 championship courses and the famous "Pinehurst #2. In 2014 they will have the Men's US Open and the following week the Women's US Open. This has never been done before back to back. If your a golfer stop at Piemhurst and call me for a visit.
