Muriel's Story
After graduating from Barstow High I attended Mills College in Oakland, Ca. After two years I married, attended the Foreign Service Institute Department of State where I learned to speak Serbo-Croatian, and intensively studied Balkan/Turkish area history, culture and politics. Completed my BA at Notre Dame/Loyola, and have taken numerous CE courses in engineering and environmental science.
We lived in Eastern Europe and the Balkans for five years due to my late husband's Foreign Service career. I served as social secretary to the Ambassador's Residence where I managed a house staff that included the former butler to the late Tsar of Russia (Nicolai), the deposed heir to the throne of Montenegro, and the Chief of Protocol under the deposed King of Jugoslavia (whose ceremonial sword sits in my living room as he found himself in a tight spot and had to sell off some of his possessions-this in Washington, DC while we were in language training). My husband, Sterling, developed severe cardia...Expand for more
c problems early in his life, and would eventually succumb to them. We have three great kids (two born in Jugoslavia), now adults, of course-one a physician/Professor of Medicine, one a dot.comer, and one an assistant in Western Maine Hospital fund raising group. I have four grandchildren. I am a retired environmental consultant, a position I held for twenty-seven years. I was privileged to manage projects in all fifty states and New Zealand and to manage and work with a group of exceptional professionals. Though challenging at times it was a wonderful career. Retired now,I travel, read, love music, the outdoors, and still do occasional pro bono work. I remember the years in Barstow fondly and sometimes stop to marvel at the education I received at Barstow Unified High School and how well it prepared me for the next phases of my life. I shall always cherish the memory of the night skies of the high desert during those years and the friendships I forged there, a few of which still thrive.
