Muriel's Story

After high school graduation I attended COS in Visalia before trekking to Fresno where I attended FSC With 91 units under my belt I began teaching First Grade in Parlier, Fresno County on a provisional credential. Twenty six years later I was living in Bakersfield, Kern County where I was active in Boy Scouts as an adult Scouter, worked on many election boards handing voting ballots to voters, and served as chairman of hobbies and collectibles, Kern County Fair for many years. I like people. And, was still teaching school. I have many happy memories of years spent in classrooms in McFarland, Kern County, and 4 years teaching Kindergarten at Edison, on the edge of Bakersfield, Kern Co. My children's father was not long home from Vietnam when we met and married, I have always felt sad that he never had opportunity to finally see the Nam vet recognized for their service, Early in our marriage we visited San Francisco ... his feet were bandaged due to an agricultural chemical accident at work, we were surrounded by a group of shrieking persons shouting Baby Killer. True he had been a combat soldier in Nam, however, the bandages on his feet had nothing to do with Nam, nor were the forceps scars on his face the result of combat. Sadly he died before the wall was built in DC and before the country began to include the Nam vet in welcome home parades. I have had a nearly life long interest in history, in particularly the War Between the States. My husband another Nam vet and I share an interest in the history of our country, hence our wedding trip nearly 30 years ago was a delight touring battlefields and visiting Washington DC. seems every stray, abandoned, dumped dog and cat seems to make their way to our house. I have wondered whether they leave secret signs down at the end of the lane as was said to be done by hoboes a generation or so ago. My sons, 2, are grown, we email, text and talk on the phone. We do live in a blessed time, back in the days when my grandparents and their families moved it was move as a group or perhaps never again see your children. Today we have frequent contact, nice!. I enjoy puzzle books, crosswords are ok, but more to my taste are cryptograms and logic puzzles. I knit, care for the cats and dogs, taught here in Oklahoma for 10 years and thought I might still be doing so at age 80, 90 or 100. a year ago one of the cute little cats wove between my feet on the front porch. landing on my knees and hands was a tad jarring, and ended my full time teaching. I garden, knit, write and volunteer at our little county fair, and review books for others. I have reviews posted on various review sites and have work, articles, poetry, essays as well as book reviews posted on AuthorsDen, writing site. Husband and I mutter now and then our annoyance that we no longer jump as high, walk as far, lift as much as we did back when we were 19. Aging gracefully is something to fight with a stick. I have long vowed when I decease I will go into the ground with a box of Clairol in my hands. 2019 I am now retired from teaching, continue writing, reviewing, knitting, gardening, county fair photo chairman, this past fair we showed 483 photos exhibited by 70 entrants; quite a change from the first year when 5 entrants and less than 50 photos were shown. I have osteoporosis and am shrinking.
