Sonja's Story

Life I have been married now for 13 years to a wonderful man who is definitely going to heaven just for putting up with me. I have a beautiful, intelligent stepdaughter who lives in Ohio. I never had children but I do have a cat. I'll probably end up being the crazy cat lady when I'm old and senile (I don't have long to wait). I've been a waitress, a bartender, a paper-pusher behind a desk but my favorite job was as a technician in the army working on Apache helicopters. Now I'm a 5th grade school teacher and this is definitely the hardest job I've ever had. Ruck marching was MUCH easier. College Tried the community college thing right after high school and took a little bit of this and little bit of that. I didn't have any real direction but did ok. Went to ASU for about a year but I was only interested in partying. Didn't do too well there. I finally graduated from Austin Peay State in Tennessee in '07 after I left the army. This time I did very well in all of my classes. I guess I'm just a late bloomer. ...Expand for more
Military I entered the army in September of '98 as a 68X or Apache armament electrician and was immediately nicknamed 'grandma' as all female newbies over the age of 25 are. Went to basic at Fort Lost-in-the-Woods then AIT (job training) at Fort Eustis in VA where I met my future husband. Was then stationed in South Korea at Camp Page in the city of Chuncheon. My future husband then followed a month later. I had a fantastic time there, Korea is beautiful and I LOVED the food. Yep, even the kimchi. Stationed next at Fort Campbell in KY/TN and my future husband followed a month later. (I think he was stalking me). Went for additional training at Ft. Hood in TX and yep, you guessed it MFH came with. Came back to Campbell and found out I was ill and could no longer stay in the army. The army booted me out at the same time that my new husband was sent to Iraq. Since then, he has been to Korea twice and Afghanistan twice. He's away for longer than he's home and that's probably why we like each other so much.
