Eleanor's Story
After graduating from Quartz Hill I left for college at University of California, San Diego (La Jolla, actually). At that time, I started dating Gene Molino, our old geography/history teacher. We married during summer break the next summer (August of 75) and I went back to school in fall to continue working on my major in physics. I came home next summer and took summer classes at Cal State Northridge, then returned again to UCSD. The separation took its toll and we separated for good in early 1977, finally divorcing in 1978. I continued my studies and graduated in 1978 with my degree in Physics with a Specialization in Earth Sciences.
I worked for a year at Solar Turbines in San Diego as an instrumentation scientist, doing mostly a laser measurement project. I was the only female engineer at the company, so it wasn't an ideal situation. A year later I left to join Burroughs Corporation as a process engineer. Burroughs later become Unisys. After 7 years at Unisys I decided a life change was needed so I took the LSAT and did great. I got a full scholarship to a local law school and in 1986 started taking classes at night while I worked. It was tough, and I learned to live on 3-4 hours of sleep a night. I finally left Unisys after 9 years, joining a law firm to work as a law clerk while finishing my last semester of law school. I graduated in June 1989 and passed the California bar the following November. I...Expand for more
became an associate at the firm, Brown, Martin, Haller & McClain, becoming a partner 3 years later, and an equity partner(owner) 2 years after that. In my 11th year at Brown, Martin I decided to go on an adventure and signed up for an eco-cruise to Antarctica. I met my husband Abe on that cruise. He lived in Atlanta at the time, so I moved to Atlanta and joined a large law firm in town. I missed San Diego, so after Abe retired and closed his business three years later, we moved back to San Diego, specifically, Cardiff-by-the-Sea. I've been with my current firm for nearly 11 years, where I am a partner, practicing intellectual property Law (patent, trademark, copyright). Abe and I have continued our adventure travels, and have gone to Africa (three times) - Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Tanzania, the Arctic (twice) (Svalbard, Iceland, Greenland, Baffin Island, Canada), South America (Ecuador (Galapagos (twice)) and Peru (Amazon)); Antarctica (twice), South Georgia Island and the Falklands, Central America (Costa Rica, Mexico-multiple times to see gray whales and the monarch butterfly migration). Most recently we cruised the sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand and Australia to complete our lifetime penguin list. Up next: Patagonia.
Abe and I have a lovely ocean view home where we live with our golden retriever, 2 cats and a macaw. Abe's two sons are married -- we have 2 grandsons and a granddaughter.
