Myron's Story

Life My life was pretty simple and constant. I moved around a bunch all the way through high school. I did the same in college. 3 different high schools and 3 different colleges. Playing basketball overseas means a lot of travel but I'm still based in Utah since my kids are here. I'll probably play another year or two overseas before I hang it up and become a regular person...if you know my first and last name you can write me a "hot" mail...God Bless and hope to hear from some of my old classmates School Anyone who can remember Myron "J.R." Simms knows I spent 10th grade at LaJunta High before moving back to Denver and graduating from Montbello. If I didn't play sports, even LESS people would remember me than the few who do now. For those who think they might remember me but aren't sure, here's a quick refresher of me in high school: I played basketball and ran track at both LJ & Montbello. I got suckered into running cross country for Montbello my senior year as well. I was in FBLA at LaJunta. I was all-league in track and basketball for LJ. At Montbello I was all-city and all-state in basketball. Not that big a deal but that's all I did good in high school besides making the honor roll a few times and earning my scholarship to Metro State. At Montbello I had crushes on Monica Martin,Kadeisha Hilliard,Nyesha Kelly,Carol Leggins,Ivy Carroll,Sheral McBryde. At La Junta I fell in "puppy-love" with Connie Jimenez, Kari Lytton, Melissa Lohrey, Vivian Vela, Dawn DiPrince. Also Juanita Torres Gonzales(Rocky Ford). That's about it for school. I played ball and lusted after t...Expand for more
hese girls. Pretty simple, as high school should be... College After graduating from Montbello in '91 I spent my freshman year of college at Metro State College of Denver where we won the CAC championship in '92. In the spring of '93 I took a visit to a junior college called Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte, Nebraska. I transferred to Mid-Plains in time to attend summer school and begin my sophomore year of school and basketball. I was the 3rd leading scorer in the nation and we won the NCCAC championship while finishing 2nd in the Region IX tournament in '94. I took an extra amount of credit hours that year to be eligible for a Division I program after junior college. I had to obtain my Associate's Degree or Metro State would be the only school I could go play for. I got scholarship offers from more than 65 schools. Just before graduating with my A.A. degree in Criminal Justice I narrowed my options and accepted a scholarship to Utah State University. We were Big West Conference champs in '95 and earned a spot in the N.I.T. I majored in Liberal Arts & Sciences at Utah State. Although I never particularly enjoyed schoolwork, my favorite subjects were Philosophy, Deductive Logic, and Theory. Most of my professors were very good and I liked learning things from them. I always loved meeting new people in my classes and on road trips during basketball season. Overall, I had a good time in college. A few twists and turns aside I wouldn't trade the experiences for anything...R.I.P. Vassarionovich D'Jaro Hunter 1972-2003 (Novich was my roommate at Utah State)
