Myrrel's Story
Life
I went to college for two years in Seattle, Washington, including a stint at the University of Washington. While there I ran into Bruce Burns (our SG highschool varsity quarterback) twice. We were never close and I was surprised to see him there. As far as I know he and I were the only SG graduates there at the time but it is a huge school.
I returned to San Bernardino and finished my degree at Cal-State SB with major in psychology. Armed with my BS degree, I ventured to to Washington, D.C. There I attended Georgetown University Law Center. I like law school and did reasonably well, graduating from GULC in May 1979. I graduated ten days after my first child was born.
I then spent three years in private practice. I grew tired of the extreme hours and took a job with the federal government. I was with various agencies for over twenty years as an attorney doing personnel and EEO law. I accepted early retirement package at age 50 in September 2004.
Currently I am working as an employment attorney with a moderately sized firm (Gebhardt & Associates, LLP) in Washington, D.C. I currently reside near Towson, Maryland with my youngest son, now 18 years old. ...Expand for more
Three of my four other children are finished with undergraduate studies. My older son is pursuing a doctorate in linguistics at the University of Maryland.
Workplace
I avoided applying for federal government jobs out of Georgetown Law School. I spent three hectic years in two very political (Republican) law firms. I assisted my boss (mentor) with work on the Reagan Administration transititon to power in 1981.
In 1982, I accepted a position as a political appointee in the Reagan Administration. I was 28 years old and rediscovered that there was more to life than working long hours as an attorney. My career in the federal government spanned four presidents and over 20 years! I worked for the Department of Comerrce and for a bureau of the Department of the Treasury. The opportunity to leave the federal sector came in 2004.
I am currently practicing employment law in Washington, D.C. Our office is filled with great people and I relish going to work. My immediate work future is to continue with the firm. Someday I will fully retire from the practice of law. I still imagine that I will find the opportunity to teach government or English at the high school level.
