Nanci's Story

Life Escaped Chgo for LA spent a year overseas and now in AZ. Became an occupational therapist and am now a faculty member of an OT program at Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ whose main campus in Downers Grove, Il. So sometimes you can go home again....and not. I can be contacted via my folks who remain in the neighborhood. How I became such a wanderer...who knows? The posted picture is from Antigua, Guatemala where I go as part of a medical mission once a year for the past 4 years. Greetings and good wishes to you all....perhaps our paths will cross. School Mostly I remember being a nerd, getting thrown out of my locker for storing my partially dissected fetal pig in it, Marina Koutsis my lockermate and dear friend, thought it smelled bad, it did and she was right. Fortunately she still liked me enough to be roommate in college at U of I. I also remember Chris Knapp and don't see him on classmates and hope he is well. Can't forget the calculus with Mr. Papengelis (sp?) I remember getting roses from Marty Kaz for a Valentine's Day (probably in 1975 or 76), yet he never acted like he liked me so now years later I finally figured out that perhaps it was a prank pulled on me and Marty by one of the "cool click." Now I understand it is cool to be a nerd in high school so perhaps my timing for being at Sullivan was a bit off. Mostly I remember doing homework for Chris Knapp so he could have dates with my friend Helen Frangoulis, they were both my friends ....however how nerdy is that? All in all high school was probably the most "painful" time of being an outsider, not quite understanding the wor...Expand for more
ld of budding sexuality and hashish yet knowing that many of my peers were better acquainted with the details....and best I keep my mouth shut so not to reveal my naivete. Thank G_d high school only lasted 4 years. Nowadays I revel in my nerdiness (professionally useful!) and most of the naivete is dispelled. College As soon as I arrived at college, it was apparent that there were lots of smart nerds and the pond was pretty big for a small fish like me. I did love the challenge and quickly discovered that the Graduate Libraries on campus were much more conducive to really studying. My favorite was the Foreign Language library where I spent many an hour with books splayed across a wood table etched with the works of many prior decades and scent of old books surrounding me. I did learn that being a little sister at the frats was a good way to socialize on my terms rather than all the obligations incurred in the lengthy pledging process and sorority life. I did have a momentary lapse of character and joined a newly forming sorority for 6 weeks.....till I could tell that more partying than I cared to do was part of the expectation. For me the most fun part of college was being involved with research and assisting within the psych department. That experience has had a lasting effect on me. I also remember getting much more into the dating scene and had some super boyfriends and a few memorable bad dates. It was at U of I that I first had my heart broken. So all and all college certainly enlightened me and I henceforth had a better understanding of life and clarification of my path.
