Nancy's Story

Life Graduated from USM in '77 and worked in Pasadena, TX as a Therapeutic Recreation Leader. Transfered to Am. Red Cross as a Field Director at FT. Riley, KS verifying emergency leave requests for soldiers/teaching safety courses/blood drives, etc. Switched to their national disaster action team going to hurricane ravaged areas to set up shelters and verify damages. Loved the work but wanted to see the world so I enlisted in the Army. Boot camp at FT. Dix, NJ, military intelligence training at FT. Devens, MA and first duty assignment at FT. Stewart, GA after being PROMISED Augsberg, Germany. Never trust the recruiter! Hated enlisted life so I signed up for Officer Candidate School at FT. Benning, GA and survived 14+ weeks of hell. Learned "I can't" is in your head; I could go without makeup and still make friends; and having more hair under my arms and on my legs than on my head was okay. Was sent to FT. Huachuca, AZ (LOVE Arizona!) for more training and then to Korea - ...Expand for more
once again, I was promised Germany.... Was assigned to an Aviation unit and swore I wouldn't have anything to do with pilots and wound up marrying one. Stayed on active duty 7 years, and 7 more in the reserves until cutting the umbilical cord in '95. While in the reserves I went to school for a nursing degree and had a 9 lb + bouncing baby boy (a DIFFERENT kind of 'nursing') while a student at age 33! Finally got to Germany in '95 as an officer's wife and spent three years in Europe. Great stuff and great skiing! Got my international ski patrol emergency assistance license while there. We left castles and Old World Europe for FT. Rucker, AL "home of the Boll Weevil Monument and the Rattlesnake Roundup" (YEEEHaaaa) for my husband's last assignment and retired in northern AL. I work two 12 hr shifts a week at a local hospital, volunteer as a hospice care giver, volunteer with Humane Society as a critter lover, and keep a sharp eye on my 15 year old son. No skiing in N. AL.

TBT 1969 13 yrs old going to someone's wedding with my Mawmaw. Thank God I didn't have to wear that hat, too! Didn't recall mirroring her pose.
My birthday gift to my husband/Jim - a new dog house. I can shove him down into it and drive his low lying car over it in the garage. Can't use my Jeep coz it sits too high!
Same litter siblings. Can u find the runt?
Elaine Allen and another one....
Elaine Achter Allen here's one for ya!
Learning to make Kimbob - similar to Sushi.
Accepted a dare to drink Korean OB from the boot. Nearly killed me.
TBT - Korea early 1980's. Never tell a Korean soldier you've never tried Soju - basically formaldehyde. They don't call the alley back from the village "ricochet alley" for nothing.
Kitten stair-steps. They are in sick bay for ringworms.
Told ya! July 5th begins Christmas season
TBT-14th Continental Army marching group at FT Devens, Massachusetts. We performed in parades on upper east coast where I fired the musket. Happy July 4th!
