Nancy's Story
THEN
I had a rough early childhood. I recall my father trying to break into the house to hurt my mother. I was two years old and screaming because the police were coming to kill my Daddy. We moved to 8 states in 6 years before we settled in Newton as he chased us around the USA.
I always wanted to be a nun when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a ridiculous idea. As it turns out, they were sorta-right. I flunked out of cloistered nunhood after a few years.
My first job was at Okemo Bakery, where I got paid $1.05/hr. to sell pastry. What I remember most about it is having a pastry fight with some kids from school. I got fired the next day.
My oldest friend was Michelina Lencioni. I met her when we were 7 and stayed in the same class from third grade to 10th grade. I never found out what happened to her after grade 11. I would hope to be remembered as kind and fun and loyal. But I think I am truly remembered as being mean and clique. People from my past who I'd most like to see again is Andrea, MIchelina, Bill, Donna, Nita, because they were kind and had fascinating gifts.
My bad: I made-out with an older male student in the custodian's room quite often during a year or two. One day the custodian came in and ALL of us screeched and ran! Never got caught (is that something to brag about)?
Sr. Dorothy was my favorite teacher. She was fun and kind and laughed a lot. She liked spending time with her students. My heroes are: my mother, MLK, Jr., many saints (too many to name), Mother Teresa, (oh, I know I am leaving someone out...) Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, Elizabeth of Russia.
My first crush has disappeared into the ethers. He asked someone else out to the Junior Prom. Oh, well. At least I was selected as princess!
I went to Boston College after SHS. I lived in apartments. Hated dorms -- way too noisy and smoky. Catholic COlleges don't allow the Greek system. Ohio University was FULL of dorms -- way too immature.
Summer college job: taking 5 20ish, developmentally delayed guys for recreation every day. One had a fetish for shoes. When we went bowling someone would "lose" a show. We would find him in the men's room....enjoying the shoe. Ewwwww. One of the others was terrified of birds. We had to carry a cage containing "Midge the Pidge" with us wherever we went. However, he still flipped out in the middle of the city screaming and jumping when he saw a bir...Expand for more
d -- at the top of his lungs. We would be running after him with "Midge the Pidge" to calm him down. It was NUTS!
NOW
My current age is 55. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be wrinkly. I was so completely thoughtless.
I am a Speech and Language Pathologist, a Special Education Teacher, and work at the elementary levels in schools. I am especially gifted in diagnosing language and learning disabilities and volunteer in urban areas. There is a children's book called "Fancy Nancy" and her last name is "Clancy", so I dress with glitter and feather boas and other sorts of "Fancy Nancy Clancy." gear. The kids LOVE it. When I retire, if the nun thing doesn't work out :) I would like to volunteer to teach a very specialized reading program in prisons and other volunteer groups.
I have two boys, now aged 22 (Adam) and 23 (Jack). With parenting, I've learned that the only rules are the rules that work. I've learned that a teacher can't teach her own kids without meltdowns. I've learned that the best way to grow them well is to be a good example.
I am inspired by: my mother, Desmond Tutu, MLK, Jr., Eunice Kennedy, Elizabeth of Russia, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Michelle Obama.
If I could not fail, I would become a cloistered nun, praying, confessing, laboring, fasting, and keeping a silent life. Obviously, all the rest would be nuns, too. In 10 years, I hope to be traveling. I'm going to get there by airplane - my husband gets free airfare after retiring from United Air Lines. That's if the nun thing doesn't work out.
BORING ANSWERS:
If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have my own space, friends, and creativity to be able to deal with the day-to-day.
Love the Red Sox, Hate reality TV. I recently lost my 150 lb. bullmastiff, and it broke my heart. He thought he was a chihuahua. The kids have had several cats, a late rabbit, and a hamster. Lots of fish (whew)
If I won $100 million, I'd give $20,000.00 of it to my Church, then spend the rest on Mom, Adam and Jack.
My best friend would tell you I'm loving and considerate., but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as a loner....I tend to be a little shy and definitely overwhelmed by large groups.
Nothing would surprise people about me. I did go to the SHS reunion a few years ago. I'm pretty plain and boring. I think some people were surprised that I went to college for lots of years.
