Nancy's Story

After high school, I went to college in New Hampshire and then SUNY, Stony Brook, Long Island. That was a big change from New England! I graduated with a degree in Cardorespiratory Sciences, which led me to a career in Perfusion (I ran the heart/lung machine in cardiac surgery). After a short time in New Jersey, I got a job in Southern California. I've lived here since 1981. Hard to believe it's been that long. New England is in my blood, but I married a SoCal guy and he can't handle the thought of living where there's actually a noticeable change of seasons. We've been married since 1985. We traveled a bit for a few years and I was fortunate to get a one year job in Holland. That was a great experience. After returning home, we started our family. We have a daughter, Hilary, who just turned 18 and a son, Sam, who is 11. About 6 years ago, I was happily able to retire from working altogether so that I could be home with the kids. A career in the medical field, working on call, doesn't mix well with parenting. ...Expand for more
It was really hard on the kids to have me working, so I was thrilled to be able to put that behind me. We got our daughter a horse several years ago. It was a lot of fun for the two of us. Last year, my daughter decided that she'd rather devote her free time to her friends and she "gave" me the horse. Not exactly what I was expecting. So, now I spend a fair amount of time at the stable by myself (20 min. away). It's fun, but very time consuming. I guess that's my main hobby. My husband and I are serial home renovators. Not necessarily our first choice, but we have owned a few homes and each has started as a fixer. I suppose I can call that another one of my hobbies, since it takes up a lot of my time. I don't think that I'll get back to Meriden any time soon. My whole family has left there. I did pull off the highway in Meriden, as I was driving through to Boston from New York. I had to take some time to check it out. A lot has changed, but a lot is exactly the same. It felt weird. That was another life.
