Nancy's Story

Life I was born and raised in Dana Point and graduated from Capo High in 1964. I began working for local veterinarian's and doctors during summer vacations and weekends while in H.S and with this background began additional schooling with the hopes of a career in animal medicine. I married shortly after highschool and have been married for 39 wonderful years to the same person! My husband was a surveyor in the Marine Corps when we met and with luck we were able to establish a land surveying business which we owned for a number of years prior to moving from San Juan Capistrano. We have two grown children. One is a Federal Officer in Las Vegas, he is married and has a 2 1/2 yr. old little boy just like himself! Our daugther is a teacher in Texas and is married with a 14 yr. old boy and a 10 yr. old girl. We moved from San Juan Capistrano (Del Obispo area)in 1979 and re-located to the beautiful Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains in Mono County. Best known for hunting, fishing and skiing at Mammoth and June Lake Mountains. We live in a rural little town in the Sierra's called Walker (you pass it on your way to Reno). Walker is located on Hwy 395, 15 miles from the Nevada stateline (Topaz Lake) My husband and myself have worked for Mono County government for the passed 24 years and truly love our jobs. He has been Mono County Public Works Director for most of that time and myself have been Animal Control Director for a good portion of that time as well. With my love of animals and the career that I had chosen it all seems to have come together for me. We have property next to the West Walker River and love the area tremendously. It is not unusual to look out onto our property and gaze at the Mule Deer grazing or bedded down. Additionally, it is not unusual for us to see a bear or mountain lion walking through the property. I own a great horse and truly enjoy meandering through the countryside with my friends. My 35 minute drive one way to work (to Bridgeport) is a wonderful way to begin the day whatever time of year it is. If you take the time to look, there are many sights that are spectacular, these include the beautiful land, the W...Expand for more
alker River and the various wild critters that we share the area with. I love to hike and within the last two years have encountered two bear while out. One of the times the bear chose to be under the same tree as I was and challenged me as to whose tree it really was. He followed me up the hill until he lost interest. The second encounter was one where the bear started chasing me then due to the noise that we made felt that it was safer to go elsewhere. The only problem with this last encounter was that I ended up above a rattlesnake den. This incident left me searching as to why I really liked to hike!!!! We really do love to hike and fish the country around us and we take advantage of the area frequently for tent camping and R.V. camping. We have a boat and try and use that as often as we can to enjoy our beautiful lakes. As much as we loved the beach area, I cannot imagine moving back to southern CA. We enjoy our mountains and jobs too much! School Born and raised in Dana Point, CA. Attended Capo Beach Union Elementary School for primary grades then attended San Juan Capistrano Union High School. Graduated the last year that it was a high school prior to students attending San Clemente High School. Took time off, worked, got married and spent a couple of years taking college classes to further my education in veterinary care. August 2013 update. I still live in our beautiful mountain hamlet of Walker, CA. and although I still miss the beach, from time to time, I know that this is where we were meant to be and where my children should be raised. I lost my husband Rich to cancer in late 2008 after 46 years together, I found that throughout the last four years I have been able to stay strong and positive due to what Rich taught me and what he always practiced during his lifetime and I hope that I have honored his words. July 1, of this year, I started my first day of retirement and although I truly miss my career, I have always taken pride in my accomplishments and now I wonder why I didn't retire sooner! To all that read my story, I wish you well, hope to hear from you and possibly see you at the reunion in 2014! Nancy
