Nancy's Story
After graduation I attended St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Richmond, VA. Graduating in 1966, I worked for a year between L&D, Nursery and Postpartum at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA. After moving back home I was employed at National Orthopedic Hospital in Arlington, VA. I was introduced to Orthopedic nursing, Rehab and the Operating room and enjoyed that aspect of nursing. With the exception of taking time off while my children were young and in school, I was employed by by National Orthopaedic before and after my children for a total of 15 years. At that time Healthcare was starting to change, smaller hospitals were going under, and Dr. Charles Engh and his son, Dr. Andy Engh had left National and went to Mt. Vernon Hospital to practice. National until the nurse that went with the Engh's resigned after four years and they called and asked me to come. I was with them for fourteen years until I retired in 2012. It was a lot of hard work, very rewarding and fun. I miss it in many ways. I also had been busy driving to Richmond, VA visiting my mother who was in a Nursing center for dementia for seven years and she passed this year. My oldest sister died in 2012 and month to the day she died, my mother-in-law passed. My husband who isn't in the best of health, had been retired years before me because of poor health, keeps me busy since my retirement, I do try to stay active, walk 3.5 miles/day with and without my neighbor,visit my grandchildren in N.C and Stafford, Va or here at home in Springfield, VA. Take a Zumba Gold class the past two years each Tuesday and attend a Grief Support group at my church on the first and third Thursdays of the month.
