I went to SUNY New Paltz after graduation from Plainview H.S. By my Jr. year I stopped and went through the marriage/divorce cycle so many young people go through. I became a single parent and found that "single meetings" in the 70's were no better than "pick-up" places. I began a group that would really work on the problems and issues faced by single parents. It was wonderful, we found members willing to help, started a baby-sitting service, child tutoring, clothes exchange, a hot line to address emotional issues, and found lawyers willing to give time to help out with advice. I wrote an article, was invited to address a conference of social workers at Grossinger's, and so my career began. I needed to return to school to get a better job. A friend told me about a school for Respiratory Therapy in Manhattan and I applied (not even knowing what an R.T. did). I was accepted and started working in every form of cardio-pulmonary therapy for the next 16 years.
