What a gift to attend Grady High! From subfreshman and sub-basement to seniors, I remember those years with great joy. My freshman year of college, tragedy struck my mom and I was suddenly repsonsible for younger brothers and way too much "adult" stuff which made for an interesting college experience. My junior and senior year, I fell in love with American history and did my student teaching at Sandy Springs High. Then off to graduate school in Boston for my masters. Planning to return to Atlanta, I just couldn't fathom how I would teach American history having lived in only one place from birth through grad school. Life detours happened, however, and I taught American history to juniors for 5 years, 2 in Boston and 3 at a boarding school in NY. Had a blast! My favorite question from one of my Boston students was: "Miss Oliver, what's a grit?" I had my Georgia aunt send me up a 5 pound bag of Jim Dandy grits and cooked up a gallon of them in the classroom and showed them every which away one could eat grits. Loved those years of teaching.
