Nancy's Story
Life
I live in a wonderful house that was built in 1908, and has belonged to the bank and I since 1989. I share my house with two cats (sisters) and a bunch of their toys. I have an amazing job where I can see my customers each day and know that I am helping them take care of their customers. I am the happiest I have ever been, and I'm not far from retirement and road trips.
School
I started my educational journey at Central Avenue Elementary just off of Canyon Road and (now) Hiway 512 in Tacoma. I attended kindergarten through second grade before we moved to Oakville where I attended school and graduated from Oakville High in May of 1974.
I adored my first grade teacher, Mrs. Alice Hanson. She was so nice to me and I learned to read in her classroom - WAHOO! A teacher in my Junior and Senior years of high school, Mr. William Fraser, inspired me to use my comfortable-with-math brain and reach for a career in accounting.
College
I attended 2 quarters at Centralia Community College, but financial matters took priority for the next 3 years. When I was 21, Trend Colleges were still around with their 9-month only the essentials courses of study. No fluff school was fast, fun, and tiring. But so worth it, I got the credits in accounting that I needed to qualify for employment. Over the years, I've gone back to local colleges for various classes, just for the fun of ...Expand for more
continuing the journey.
Workplace
Following graduation, I was a cook and server at the drive-in restaurant in Rochester. I worked there for about 3 years and then moved on to be the only female cook at a brand new VIP'S Restaurant in Olympia for nearly a year. When I began working at Kitsap County Health Department as a really and truly accountant type, I also took a weekend graveyards job at the Bremerton Eastside Denny's. In 1980, I went to work for Washington State and have since worked at many different locations (Rainier School, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington Soldiers Home & Colony, General Administration, Revenue to name a few) and levels in accounting. I began as an Accounting Assistant at Rainier School; for about two years was the Chief Financial Officer at Western State Hospital; and am now the Director of Patient Financial Services at Western. I am able to apply my years of experience in the field in a location where I am helping others. I don't provide care to the patients directly, but the amazing staff in my section do provide direct assistance to our patients in the area of accessing any benefits to which they are entitled during hospitalization, and in their home community following discharge from Western.
Military
I never had the honor of serving in the military. My father and both of my brothers did, but that's the closest I got.
