Nancy's Story
After high school I went to California. I got a job as a cashier at a gas & diesel truck stop. I never knew people could be so stupid! This was at I-5 & I-505 in Dunnigan, CA. The first day was the fourth of July. I later enrolled in the local junior college...the satellite in Woodland of Yuba College. Then off to Sacramento. I worked as a temp for a while. I always thought I would just go to the university after high school. I was accepted at UNR to study Biology. I wanted to get in to the field of Marine Biology. I was a regular on the beach in the summer. I went to Puerto Rico with my husband. I had my first son in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. I lived in Puerto Rico for about a year. I made sure I saw the island. The rain forest is beautiful. I will always remember sitting under a waterfall in the rain forest and hiking to all the guard houses from when the Spanish ruled Puerto Rico several hundred years ago. I saw the place where dignitaries visited and ate...such as Teddy Roosevelt and FDR. I was determined to go to college. I almost went to World University in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. I was to have books in English and lectures in Spanish.
We returned to the states. Reno, NV first. It was really funny because ...Expand for more
I was prepared for a humid and warm climate not the frigid cold winter in Reno. I had to get clothing for my son. Some of it was pink! We went to Imperial Beach, CA then Chula Vista, CA (San Diego area) I had my second son in San Diego, CA. Then off to West Sacramento, CA. After a few years I learned how to drive a semi-tractor trailer. I am a black tea drinker. So I always had a thermos of hot water and another of milk. When I ran out the door to work I carried my thermoses and my commuter cup of ambition full of tea. I also had my maps and my log book. I ended up in Vallejo, CA. My last driving job was for Ryder/Ford out of Richmond, CA. I liked that job. I went from Richmond to Canyonville, OR. I exchanged trailers and returned to Richmond, CA after getting 8 hours of sleep. The same time I had this job I was back in college. Solano Community College in Suisun, CA. I managed to get about 70 semester units there. I injured myself at work at another job. Over the years it has been awful. It is part of why I have been on SSI since 1992. I have been working with CA State Rehab. I have finally received a degree. It's an associates of science in human services.I am trying to find a job. It is hard having been out of the job market for a while.
