Nancy Smith:

CLASS OF 1978
Gresham, OR
Portland, OR

Nancy's Story

Life I've been married to my husband Riley since 1988. We have a grown daughter and I have a son from a previous marriage. We have one Australian Cattle Dog -- a Red Heeler named Ringo, and two Morkies named Bailey and ZuZu. We are members at New Hope Community Church. I have always loved to sing; I started high school as a Soprano, finished high school as a Second Alto and now sing Tenor as part of the Portland Singing Christmas Tree. School Crushes?!? What a horrible thought! I had a few, didn't everyone? I remember grade school. Dan Foster told me at the 25th reunion that I had a crush on him way back when. I suppose I did on and off, but I always think of him as a friend. Childhood sucked and Dan was usually nice to me when I needed him to be. There was also Andy Florance, but so many of us liked Andy at one point that he charged us 5 cents to be part of his "fan club." I liked Andy's mother, too -- she rescued me from a particularly bad experience at eighth grade graduation. Dane Ackerman was in my neighborhood, too -- he had the good (mis-) fortune to be nice and good looking in most girl's opinions. At CHS, the only person I really remember being interested in didn't start or finish with our class but was there in the middle and I have no idea what happened to him so I guess I will just keep his name to myself. If you were to ask me one-on-one who it was I would tell you. The thing I remember most about those years is that I loved to dance. But teenage boys being what they are, were...Expand for more
too image-conscious to be seen dancing with the likes of me so I spent most of the time holding up a wall on the fringe of the gym/cafeteria. What a waste. The teacher that inspired me the most was my fifth grade teacher at "Big" Lynch. Mrs. Helen Phoebe Lawrence Kirk. She was great and made class very interesting. My favorite teacher at CHS was Mr. Mott. He even filled in as my dad at the Father/Daughter banquet. He retired while my daughter was at CHS and passed away in 2014. I also really liked Mrs. Mouser and have good memories of being her "roomate" in New York City. Would I "do it all over again?" For the most part, not on your life! College I attended Pacific Lutheran University on a music scholarship for one semester but then my mother died and I couldn't bring myself to go back without a support system. I attended Mt Hood Community College from '83 to '85 and graduated with honors. Even made the Dean's list a few times. Workplace I have worked in one capacity or another for the Air Force Reserve here in Portland since 1987. I loved the mission when we were Rescue but when we changed to air-refueling we lost some of our purpose. The doors on the 939th were locked on June 28, 2008. We were closed by BRAC. It was a really sad, frustrating, and stressful time. I enjoyed the unit and its members so much and it seems as if we have lost a big part of our family. Update 2015: I have been employed with the Department of the Interior since 2010. Look me up on FaceBook as Nancy Rae Smith.
