Nancy's Story
The day after graduating from Oxon Hill Senior High School I started my first job, working at the Washington Navy Yard as a clerk typist, GS-2, making minimum wage $3+ change, an hour. I had been accepted at Frostburg State College in Maryland, but after visiting and finding out I would not have on campus housing. I decided to work a year before going to college. Meanwhile I heard about Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, from a neighbor. After a visit, I found my college. I earned enough in one year to pay for one semester. Student loans got me through the next three years in addition to working at the Navy Yard ever summer and during Christmas (yes then we called it Christmas holidays back then).
I earned my BS in education, from Sheherd College, now Shepherd University, majoring in health and physical education, minor in Library Science. I did my internship in Library Science in Hagerstown, Maryland, elementary physical education at Virginia Avenue Elementary School, Winchester, Virginia and secondary health and physical education at Handley High School, Winchester. I loved Handley. My supervising teacher was Mrs. Nikki Isherwood, a life long friend. After graduating I could not find a teaching position. I went back home and back to the Washington Navy Yard. They new me so well in Human Resources from summers and Christmas, and now I had a college degree so they hired me to work in Human Resources. I worked there for one year until there was an opening in the State Demonstration Physical Education Department at Handley High School. Back to Winchester, Virginia in 1973.
In 1980 I packed up and left Handley to go to Tulsa, Ok to work with Madeline Manning Mims Ministries. I helped organize and handl...Expand for more
ed her bookings and traveled with her for 5 years. I met Madeline, an Olympic gold and silver medalist at an FCA summer conference in 1978.
In 1984 I married Charles Gilliland and we left Tulsa in 1987 to move to Orlando, I worked in an attorney's office as an administtrative assistant to the senior partner. After a year I called Nikki Isherwood and she suggested I go back into teaching.
I started teaching Health education at Maitland Middle School in Orange County Public Schools in August 1988, I moved to the District office two years later as a resource teacher for five years.
I divorced in 1995, after 10 years. In 1999, after two years of my mom moving from Pensacola, and us living together, she passed away in July 1999 from cancer. In November 1999 I moved to Daytona Beach, Florida and worked for three years at Riverview Learning Center, an alternative 6-12 school. Three years was enough, so back to Orlando I went in 2002.
Back in OrLando I became the Tech Prep Coordinator at Colonial High School for five years. After the grant ran out I moved to Legacy Middle School as the SAFE Coordinator for three years until the funding was withdrawn for middle schools (another grant). I am now ending my third year at University High School as the SAFE Coordinator (student and family assistance).
I love what I do, helping students and their families. I have no idea when this will end. I hope this is my last school.
I am looking forward to retiring and moving back to the Winchester, Virginia/West Virginia area. I know that I will be going back and helping one of my former students in her ministry, similar to what I did when I left Handley High School, in 1980, 32 years ago.
