Nanette's Story

My husband, Gordon Gaither (Hart '66) went into the Navy in 1966 and retired 21-1/2 yrs. later. He was my boyfriend from summer of '65 and the majority of the time I was in high school, but we broke up not long after my graduation. We got back together again a year later. It was fate. We got married in Newhall in Aug. '70. Big wedding. We lived in military housing in Lemoore, CA and in San Diego, CA. and lived for an horrible winter and spring in Millington, TN. I can laugh about it now, but while we were there, we went through a tornado at night that went through our trailer park, freezing weather, snow, and floods and having our landlord sell the trailer we were living in without telling us. What an adventure! I was so happy to be alive and get back to our next duty station in CA that I actually kissed the ground in front of my parent's house when we arrived home! We enjoyed being a military family, though, and somehow, we made it through the years in spite of the times he was gone. We made many friends during the years. He retired from the military in '88 while our boys were young. We have two grown sons, John and Stephen--both in their early 30's and unmarried. No grandchildren yet--there is still time for that. Stephen is still working his way through college and has been with his girlfriend for 8 yrs. I worked at Magic Mountain in the "first crew" in 1971. Still keep in touch with a friend from that fun summer. Before that I worked at Farmers Insurance and as a Dental Asst. When the boys were young, I was a clerk at a high school in the inner city and then worked 8 yrs. in the classroom as a Special Ed. Instructional Aide--teaching slower-learning teenagers English and Reading and summer school English (regular education) English classes. During that time, I also worked as a aide to the teachers in the Consumer and Family Studies Dept. That was followed by several years working in the Special Ed. classrooms in two inner city Middle Schools. After I "burned out", I learned Blueprinting and became a Blueprinter for a couple of years. We enjoyed Square Dancing and Clogging with our clubs for many years. We were in a Sq. Dance Exhibition group for awhile presenting S...Expand for more
quare Dancing as visual entertainment to large groups. I really enjoyed dancing from the time I was a little girl and really never stopped various forms of dancing until a decade+ ago when my body put a screeching halt to all of the jumping around and the years of dancing came back to haunt me. :-) We enjoyed traveling and RVing with our boys when they were growing up. Both of us were Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders for years. Can you imagine me as a Boy Scout hiking the hills? :-) When the kids were in high school, we got very involved with their class' parent groups and Football Boosters! Talk about full circle! Both boys were in Drama and John majored in Drama in college so we attended lots of plays over the years. After they graduated, we spent more than a dozen years working with the high school marching band as community volunteers. So much fun! Still love it but have left it to others now. I've traveled on school buses way too many miles! We even went to hot and very muggy Washington DC with the very large band, the flag and drill teams and all of the equipment during the week of July 4th, 2001...over 200 strong! We enjoy traveling, especially to do research on our family genealogies--a work in progress for me for the last 30+ yrs. Still love visiting historical places in the US. and Canada. After so many years running from place to place,we are slowing down and taking time for us and what we enjoy. Gordon's main hobby is bicycling (serious hobby. He's also an official and a judge for the bike races) with his club and mine is reading, scrapbooking and genealogy. We want to get back to Sq. Dancing again after so many years away. Good exercise and so much fun meeting people. I wish when I was in school that I would have appreciated growing up in the SCV when it was still small and had only one high school. It wasn't until it was gone that I truly knew what it meant. I was fortunate to be in a "special" graduating class that is still revered in Hart High history..the class of '68. When I worked in the classroom, I realized how great our teachers were--and how patient! So "hat's off" to all of you who attended and/or graduated from Hart. We'll always be Hart Indians!
