Nathan's Story

I was born in Arkansas and moved to California around 1959, when I was in second grade we moved to SSF and I attended Martin School, then Parkway with a small amount of time at Pulaski Height Jr. High in Little Rock for the 9th grade. I returned to SSF to attend SSFHS and Graduated in 1972. I had joined the Navy on the delayed entry program in March of 1972 so two weeks after I graduated I was in Boot camp in San Diego. After San Diego I attended Navy schools in Great Lakes, Illinois. From there it was back to California for more school at Mare Island. After graduating from school at Mare Island I left for a three month stint on the USS Saratoga CV60. I left the Saratoga and joined the USS Nimitz in 1973 and transferred off the Nimitz in 1978 to go to Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico. While on the Nimitz I learned how to Scuba Dive and learned after 8 or 9 parachute jumps that I was just paying people to scare the hell out of me. In 1980 I left Puerto Rico for the Harbor Clearance Unit 2 in lovely Little Creek, VA to learn how to be a Navy Diver. Training was very tough, the first day we started with 39 people and at the end of the day only had 18 left. But of those 18 only two failed to graduate with the class one for blowing out his eardrum and the other for finally getting a school he wanted, he was already a Navy Seal so he really didn't have much to lose by quitting diving school. After graduating from Diving School i went to the USS Yosemite AD 19 in Mayport. We spent our time there diving everyday working on ships. pecial jobs for David Taylor Research and Development Center. After leaving Mayport, Florida I went to attend Mixed Gas Diving School in Panama City, Florida, After graduating from school I was transferred to California to the USS Acadia AD 42, I met them in Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and the cruise was a blast. From the Acadia I crossed over to the Harbor Clearance Unit One Detachment in San Diego. I got to work with the Underwater Hull Cleaning group. Harbor Clearance Unit One Detachment became the Consolidated Divers Unit, It later changed its name to something else. From CDU I went to the USS Proteus AS 19 a ship that had been launched during WWII and was at the Japanese Surrender at Tokyo. What a rust bucket, stationed at Proteus Point, Guam. From the USS Proteus I transferred back to Hawaii to the USS Safeguard ARS 50 where I spent two years before transferring to the Dive School on Ford Island. A great place to be stationed. After almost 22 years in the service I retired from the Navy in 1993. After retiring I started to finished my college degree and started at Canada City College, Then up to San Jose State where I got my History Degree and my teaching certification. I started teaching as a long term sub at SSFHS in 2001, and continued teaching there until 2004, I got tired of sitting inside everyday and decided to go off and work as a contractor in Afghanistan for 8 months, I got tired of the job I had there and quit and as soon as I got back applied for a job for another contractor and left a couple weeks later for Texas and then off to Iraq.
