Neil's Story

Life My Spouse Through a military buddy My Pets I have a German Shepard/Aussie Shepard mix named Angel My Kids Both are GREAT kids... Nothing like me when I was in school! Both kids are also martial art instructors (just like their dad!) My Job I am an instructor on the Boeing 737 NG, MD-80, MD-90 and 717 Aircraft. It is the best job I coud ask for. During a layoff period, from 2001 to 2005 I spent the conducted contract training and consulting for the FAA. During that time I was finally finishing my degree. In 2005 I started working for Raytheon as a Technical Support Engineer. I supported all kinds of military products from Raytheon, ranging from aircraft to air defense. Boeing hired me back in 2008. I am also a 2nd Degree Black Belt, and Master of Pa Kua martial art. I teach Pa Kua in my spare time. College I finished college as an adult, so I did not have the traditional college experience. The closest thing I had to a college experience in my youth was during my US Air Force technical training... It was more like college with uniforms. We went to school during the day, and partied at night and all weekend... Lots of parties, very laid back. While we didn't have to turn in any papers, we had to study for some very difficult exams. Roughly 30% of the students did not make it through the training. I ran in to some of them later in my military service. They were in dead-end career fields such as Bus Drivers, supply clerks and such. ...Expand for more
After leaving the military, I had the experience and knowledge to perform jobs that were normally for engineers with four year degrees. Military I joined the US Air Force one year after graduating High School. I needed to get training and experience, and chose the Air Force because it was the least military branch of service. After graduating Boot Camp at Lackland AFB, TX, I went through technical training at Keesler AFB, MS. During that time, the Sandanistas took over in Nicaragua, and the Ayatollah took over in Iran. I began to get "Gung Ho" and started taking things more seriously. I worked as an Avionics Technician, and was later provided additional training for the Disaster Response Force Mobility Team (Nuclear, Biological Warfare). I left the service for 3 months at the end of my first enlistment. I missed the military and re-enlisted for 6 years. Unfortunately an accident on duty left me with fairly serious injuries that forced me out of the military 1.5 years into my second enlistment. My military training and experience allowed me to get some good jobs. When I was finally laid off in 2002, the VA paid for me to go back to school and get a degree. Also, because of my military injuries, my children can attend any Cal State or UC school for free. I told them that they will get their degrees because I already paid for it. Overall, my military experience was very beneficial to me. However, I would have preferred NOT to get injured!
