Nestor's Story

Life I thought it was about time, that I document a personal chronicle based on recent events that have occurred and changed my goals and perspective on life. During most of my working life I have been very diligent in building a career in the IT corporate world. In so doing I moved up the corporate ladder from being a junior programmer to a project manager and was rewarded with more than a livable package (the golden handcuffs). Unfortunately the world is not the same as it was for our parents whom would normally marry into a company and then retire and live happily ever after, as we were taught to believe. For 30 years of my career I worked mainly on mainframe computer technologies, designing, developing, maintaining and managing large IT projects for one of the largest gold mining operations in the world (Anglogold part of the Anglo American group). As the story goes, at the end of 1999 the mining section of Infogold that I was part of was floated as a separate company (GMSI) and eventually sold to another company called AST. Then in March 2001 I was retrenched from GMSI, the feeling was awful, the excuse being that the company did not require my type of services any longer (high-lighting the saying “if you want loyalty then buy yourself a dog”); I was not bitter towards the GMSI company, just disappointed. This started me off in the contracting world where I worked for Deloitte & Touche and various other corporations as a project manager and sometimes as a senior business analyst; all in all a very rewarding and a educational experience. As Tom Hanks, acting as Forest Gump so eloquently put it “Life is like a box of chocolates you never now what you’re going to get”. But then the crunch came with the impact of 911, the global recession, cost cutting exercises and the day the IT bubble burst. Luckily for me I have always been a frugal individual and have invested in various schemes providing various revenue streams that would be my survival pack through the...Expand for more
se turbulent times. I was also fortunate to have continuously done some homework in the field of small to medium size IT business systems that utilized personal computers. I have always had a keen interest in designing and writing PC networking systems as a hobby for business friends and acquaintances. A little extra beer money never hurt anyone. At the end of May 2002 one of my last contracts ended and I once again ventured out to find new employment. Finding it difficult to find a post as a IT development manager I decided to give it a rest and refocus my energies into helping my son restore an old dilapidated 1961 VW Beatle which we found in a junk yard. So my son and I we went out and bought the VW manuals and got to work; that took us 8 weeks, which gave my son and I immense pleasure and satisfaction. The old Beatle is currently working like clockwork and taking my son to work daily. But the looming question was still not answered: what was I to do with the rest of my life? Towards the beginning of July 2002 I started reflecting back onto some of my old hobby DOS based systems that I developed back in the early 80’s. I then started to think about mixing some of those old concepts with the new available technologies, which triggered some fascinating possibilities. That is when I decided to take some of those early day ideas and create a new business model, molding them into a multi-User architecture that was also inspired by the movie called “The Minority Report”. For those of you that have seen the movie, remember Tom Cruise standing in the middle of his office floor manipulating the holographic computers multiple virtual Windows. Bringing the computer Windows in and out of focus, allowing him to analyze and to work as simple or as sophisticated as he so wished. Funny how something’s inspire and motivate the creative energies. Thus the vision of the RAPS(Rental And Point-of-sales System)was born. I have never looked back. Do I hear one hand clapping?
