Brenda's Story

Life Hi, I live in Des Moines, Iowa, where I have resided for about 20 years. I got married in 1981 and moved to North Carolina where my husband was stationed in the Marine Corps. 2 years later he got stationed in San Diego and we spent 2 years there. Best weather in America, beautiful blooms in January, great sightseeing. But too crowded, expensive cost of living and unsafe many places at night. While there I finished my two year AA degree hoping to further pursue a bachelor's degree in graphic art design. Shortly after my husband got out of the military and we moved to Iowa, we had our first son. Three years later we had a second son. I decided to be a stay-at-home mom which I loved. Over the years I was a teacher's aide and did volunteer work both at school and at an inner city food pantry/clothing center. My husband was a computer programmer at a large financial institution. In late 2003, he had a massive heart attack and passed away. A difficult and painful time, especially for my sons who were then 13 and 16. The following summer I started back to college, where I was the oldest student in many of my classes. A difficult transition, but I loved being back in school again and did well. I attended 2 semesters, and hope to go on and complete a bachelor's degree, but I have needed to get employment now and am looking for something part time to work into full time. I attend a large interdenominational church regularly. I vote in all major elections. I take line dance lessons and country western dance lessons at a local bar a couple of times a week and go out on the weekends to practice what I've learned. I love dancing! I've been to Disney World and Universal Studios in Florida twice which was great fun, would love to go again someday. I would also love to go...Expand for more
to New York City and see a Broadway play or two someday. I usually get back to Arizona once a year, in the past it was usually in the hot hot summer, but 2005 and this spring will be during spring break in March, that is if I don't have a new job by then that will keep me from traveling. I think about Scottsdale High School now and then and feel sadness when I'm there and go down Indian School Rd. and pass by where it used to be. Youth is often such a sheltered time and it would be nice to revisit it again for just a day. My sons think I am stupid and old fashioned, but hey, what do they know. I still see myself as about 18 in my heart. I wonder if I will still feel that way when and if I make it to 75. Maybe I'll just be tired. I know I was fairly shy and introverted when I was growing up, but I am learning to be more comfortable with who I am and in new relationships with new friends now. Funny how as you get older you don't seem to care as much about what people really think of you. Well, gotta get on with life. Adios, (I took Spanish I & II this past year, they were the hardest college classes I ever took!) Brenda Newman (Luster) I always wanted to be a n actress when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a silly idea. As it turns out, they were probably right. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Kathy Yancey, because she helped me get through a very difficult time during my sophomore year of high school. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my living room and have built in shelves around my fireplace and add on a library. My dream home would be a nice condo where i don't have to do any yardwork. From my children, i've learned how to relax more, to forgive quickly, to tone down the perfectionism, and to trust God more!
